Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has admitted that the team failed to prepare adequately for Hull City’s biggest strengths after the Red Devils suffered a disappointing 2 0 defeat in their opening Premier League match of the 2026/27 season.
United travelled to Hull with renewed optimism after an encouraging pre season, but their campaign quickly took an unexpected turn as two goals from set pieces condemned Ruben Amorim’s side to a damaging defeat.
The result was particularly frustrating for the Manchester United players because they had already identified Hull’s ability to threaten from dead ball situations as one of the major dangers they needed to control.
Shaw acknowledged after the match that United were aware of Hull’s strengths but failed to execute their defensive preparations when it mattered most.
Speaking after the game, the England international described the defeat as disappointing and admitted that the team should have done more to prepare for the challenge presented by their opponents.
United knew Hull were capable of causing problems through set pieces, wide deliveries and crosses into the penalty area. Despite that knowledge, the visitors conceded twice from situations they had specifically identified as dangerous.
The opening goal came after a corner created confusion inside the United penalty area. Goalkeeper Senne Lammens made a save from Ollie McBurnie’s attempt, but the rebound fell to Ajayi, who reacted quickly to put Hull ahead.
The second goal followed another dead ball situation. Regan Slater delivered a free kick into a dangerous area and Mendy rose above the United defence to head the ball into the net.
The two goals exposed a serious weakness in United’s defensive organisation and left Amorim’s players facing an uphill battle for the remainder of the contest.
Shaw admitted that the team could have prepared better, especially because Hull’s approach was not a surprise.
The defender’s comments will raise concerns among Manchester United supporters because the problems were not caused by an unexpected tactical strategy. Instead, the visitors were beaten by a threat they had already discussed before the match.
The defeat also highlighted United’s struggles at the other end of the pitch. Although they controlled possession during periods of the match, they failed to produce the attacking quality needed to overcome Hull’s defensive structure.
Shaw acknowledged that United lacked the decisive touch in the final third and were unable to create enough danger after falling behind.
For a club with Manchester United’s ambitions, losing the opening league match was already disappointing. Doing so after conceding two preventable set piece goals makes the result even more frustrating.
Shaw refused to search for excuses, however. The defender acknowledged that the season was only beginning and some players may still be working towards their best physical and technical condition, but he insisted that this could not be used to justify the performance.
According to Shaw, Manchester United should have travelled to Hull expecting to win regardless of the opponent’s reputation.
That attitude reflects the expectations surrounding the club. United are attempting to rebuild under Amorim and begin the new season with ambitions of returning to the upper end of the Premier League table.
A defeat to a newly promoted side immediately puts pressure on the team to respond quickly. The players will now have to demonstrate that the Hull result was an isolated setback rather than evidence of deeper problems.
The timing of the defeat makes the upcoming fixtures particularly important. United are scheduled to face Ipswich Town on August 30, giving Amorim and his players an opportunity to respond to the disappointing opening weekend.
Before then, the Red Devils also have a Carabao Cup fixture against Stoke City on August 25.
Those matches could provide United with an opportunity to restore confidence, but defensive improvement will be one of the most important areas requiring attention.
For Shaw, the defeat serves as an early warning that preparation and concentration must improve immediately.
Manchester United cannot afford to repeatedly concede goals from situations that opponents are expected to exploit. Set pieces have become an increasingly important part of modern football, and failing to defend them effectively can quickly turn competitive matches against even the most determined opponents.
Hull, meanwhile, deserve credit for taking advantage of their opportunities. They followed their game plan effectively and punished United whenever they were presented with openings.
For Manchester United, however, the focus will now shift towards recovery. The players must respond on the pitch, while Amorim will be expected to make the tactical adjustments necessary to prevent another disappointing performance.
The opening day defeat has certainly dampened the optimism that surrounded United during pre season, but there is still a long campaign ahead.
Shaw’s frank assessment may ultimately prove useful if it forces the squad to confront its weaknesses early. United now have an opportunity to show that they have learned from their mistakes and can turn the disappointment at Hull into motivation for the difficult months ahead.
