An unspecified number of soldiers and civilians are missing following a Boko Haram ambush in Baga, a community in Nigeria situated on the fringes of Lake Chad.

The attack highlights the ongoing terror campaign by Boko Haram, a group notorious for targeting both military personnel and civilians in the region.

Reports indicate that the soldiers were on a recovery mission to retrieve the bodies of 40 farmers brutally killed by the terrorists when they were ambushed.

The tragic operation resulted in a deadly gun battle, leaving several soldiers dead and others unaccounted for.

The ambush by Boko Haram serves as a grim reminder of the persistent insecurity plaguing communities near Lake Chad.

Local residents reported that about 50 individuals, including soldiers, members of the civilian joint task force, hunters, and vigilantes, embarked on the recovery mission on Tuesday.

Shockingly, only one individual has returned since the ambush.

A local resident who spoke to Diaspora digital media (DDM)  stated,

“I cannot discuss military casualties at this time, but among the missing civilians are members of the civilian joint task force and vigilantes.”

Military sources confirmed the attack, revealing that troops deployed for the recovery mission encountered heavy resistance from Boko Haram fighters.

“There was an exchange of gunfire, and some of our soldiers were killed.

We are still trying to determine the total number of casualties, as the dead bodies have yet to be retrieved and some soldiers remain unaccounted for,” a military source said.

The resurgence of Boko Haram in this area has created an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty.

Despite military efforts to curb their activities, the group continues to carry out coordinated attacks, claiming lives and disrupting the livelihoods of local communities.

This ambush highlights the dangers faced by those tasked with combating Boko Haram’s insurgency.

Military authorities have yet to release an official statement regarding the incident, but the magnitude of the attack underscores the need for improved security measures.

Boko Haram remains a significant threat, not only to Nigeria but also to neighboring countries in the Lake Chad Basin.

The group’s ability to strike with such precision raises questions about the adequacy of counter-terrorism strategies.

For now, the community of Baga is left to grapple with the aftermath of the ambush, as families mourn their missing loved ones.

This attack adds to the long list of atrocities committed by Boko Haram, further emphasizing the urgent need for decisiveaction to end their reign of terror.
