Soludo Turns Teachers’ Day Into Political Rally, Says LP Candidate Moghalu

(DDM) – Labour Party governorship candidate in Anambra State, Dr. George Moghalu, has strongly criticised Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo for allegedly politicising the 2025 World Teachers’ Day celebration instead of using the occasion to address the genuine welfare concerns of educators across the state.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that Dr. Moghalu made the statement through his Special Assistant on Media, Johnson Okoye, condemning what he described as an “abuse of authority” and “political manipulation” of public school teachers.

According to Moghalu, teachers and school proprietors were reportedly compelled to participate in a politically motivated rally disguised as a Teachers’ Day event, with directives allegedly given to principals to submit photocopies of teachers’ voter cards, polling unit details, and phone numbers ahead of the gathering.

He described the action as a blatant form of political intimidation, warning that such conduct undermines the dignity of teachers and violates their fundamental rights as citizens.

Dr. Moghalu stressed that World Teachers’ Day is globally recognised as a moment to celebrate educators’ contributions and to discuss their welfare and working conditions, not to advance partisan agendas or stage political rallies.

He said, “It is unfortunate that what should have been a solemn celebration of teachers’ efforts has been turned into a political carnival.

Teachers deserve respect, not manipulation. Before organising rallies in their name, the governor should first address their welfare package and conditions of service.”

The Labour Party candidate noted that teachers in Anambra continue to grapple with poor remuneration, delayed promotions, lack of modern teaching materials, and dilapidated school infrastructure, despite the government’s repeated claims of prioritising education.

He added that the true celebration of teachers lies in improving their living standards, not coercing them into political pageantry.

According to him, “The Soludo administration should focus on practical steps to enhance teachers’ welfare, including timely promotions, regular training, and adequate classroom resources, rather than turning them into tools of political validation.”

Reaffirming his own commitment to education reform, Dr. Moghalu promised that under a Labour Party-led government, education would be treated as the foundation of development rather than a platform for propaganda.

He assured that his administration would prioritise teachers’ welfare, invest heavily in modern learning facilities, and restore the dignity of the teaching profession in Anambra State.

“Teachers are not political instruments,” he declared. “They are nation builders who deserve respect, motivation, and sincere leadership, not intimidation or exploitation.”

Moghalu further called on civil society organisations, parent associations, and education stakeholders to resist any attempt to politicise schools or teachers’ unions, insisting that education should remain a non-partisan sector dedicated solely to shaping future generations.

He concluded that the Labour Party remains committed to returning integrity and value to education in Anambra, saying, “The best gift any leader can give to teachers is good governance, not political coercion.”
