South Africa’s Ruling Party, ANC, Forms Unity Government with Opposition Parties

South Africa’s ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC), has reached a deal to form a unity government with its political opponents, the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP).

This move comes after the ANC lost its parliamentary majority in the recent elections, winning only 159 out of 400 seats in the National Assembly.

The DA, led by John Steenhuisen, has agreed to join the ANC in a government of national unity, marking a significant shift in the country’s political landscape. The IFP, a Zulu nationalist party, has also agreed to join the unity government.

However, the radical leftist Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has refused to participate, citing ideological differences.

The unity government deal was announced on the day of the first sitting of the new parliament, where President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to be reelected.

The ANC’s Secretary-General, Fikile Mbalula, confirmed that the party had engaged in exploratory discussions with the EFF but failed to reach an agreement.

The formation of a unity government is seen as a positive development for South Africa, which has been plagued by political instability and corruption in recent years.

The ANC’s loss of majority has been seen as a sign of declining support for the party, which has been in power since the end of apartheid in 1994.

The DA, which has been a longstanding opposition party, has campaigned on a platform of saving South Africa from the ANC.

However, the party has put aside its differences to form a government of national unity, which is seen as a significant step towards political stability and economic growth.

The unity government will be led by President Ramaphosa, who is expected to unveil his new cabinet soon.

The cabinet is likely to include members from the ANC, DA, and IFP, as well as other smaller parties that have agreed to join the government of national unity.

The formation of a unity government in South Africa is a significant development that could have far-reaching implications for the country’s political and economic landscape.
