ABUJA, Nigeria — Stakeholders in Nigeria’s sports sector have called for increased strategic investment, improved governance, and stronger infrastructure development to unlock the country’s vast sporting potential and drive long-term growth.

The call was made during a gathering of sports administrators, industry experts, policymakers, and development advocates who examined the challenges facing Nigerian sports and explored pathways to sustainable progress. Participants emphasized that while Nigeria possesses abundant athletic talent, the sector requires deliberate planning and investment to achieve consistent success at both national and international levels.

Speakers at the event stressed that sports should be viewed not only as a recreational activity but also as a viable economic sector capable of generating employment, attracting investment, and contributing significantly to national development. They argued that strategic funding and effective management could transform sports into a major driver of economic growth.

A recurring theme during the discussions was the need for transparency and accountability in the administration of sports institutions. Participants noted that poor governance and inadequate oversight have often undermined development efforts, resulting in missed opportunities for athletes and sports organizations. They called for stronger institutional frameworks to ensure that resources allocated to sports are utilized efficiently and effectively.

The stakeholders also highlighted the importance of modern sports infrastructure, pointing out that many facilities across the country require rehabilitation or complete redevelopment. According to them, quality infrastructure is essential for talent development, athlete preparation, and the successful hosting of local and international competitions.

Attention was also drawn to grassroots sports development, with speakers advocating greater support for schools and community-based programmes. They argued that early talent identification and structured training systems are critical for building a sustainable pipeline of athletes capable of competing at the highest levels.

Several contributors emphasized the role of the private sector in sports development, urging businesses and corporate organizations to increase their participation through sponsorships, partnerships, and investments. They noted that collaboration between government and private investors would help address funding gaps and create new opportunities within the industry.

The discussion further explored the potential of sports tourism, sports technology, and sports-related entrepreneurship as emerging areas that could expand the economic impact of the sector. Participants encouraged policymakers to create enabling environments that attract both local and foreign investment into these areas.

The event concluded with a consensus that Nigeria possesses the talent and population needed to become a global sports powerhouse. However, participants maintained that achieving such a vision would require long-term planning, consistent investment, transparent administration, and a commitment to building modern infrastructure across the country.

They urged government authorities, sports federations, private investors, and development partners to work together in creating a more sustainable sports ecosystem capable of delivering lasting benefits for athletes, communities, and the national economy.
