Storm Darragh, a category five storm with winds of up to 175mph (281km/h), has brought severe weather conditions to the UK, resulting in widespread disruptions.

According to a report, a van driver tragically lost his life after a tree fell on his vehicle.

As gathered by the Diaspora Digital Media (DDM), the storm’s 90mph winds caused power cuts, uprooted trees, and canceled events and travel.

A rare red weather warning was issued by the Met Office, affecting around three million people in parts of Wales and southwest England.

Although the warning has ended, yellow and amber alerts remain in place, with winds still reaching up to 70-80mph.

According to the National Grid, tens of thousands of people are without power, and several events and attractions have been canceled.

Travels have been severely affected, with many train services and flights canceled.

Events cancelled because of Storm Darragh

On Friday, a yellow weather warning for wind was issued by the Met Office, covering the whole area from 3 pm to 6 am on Sunday, with winds expected to reach 70 mph.

In just a few weeks to Christmas, many occasions have been fixed to celebrate all over the region on Saturday.

Storm Darragh’s impact has led to the cancellation of various occasions, disappointing those with tickets and reservations.

Several prominent regional events, such as Kielder Winter Wonderland and North Shields Christmas Market, have been canceled.

Newcastle

The Ouseburn Christmas Market has been rescheduled to next weekend, originally set to commence on December 7.

The organizers of the Christmas market on its Facebook page wrote “Due to safety concerns, our Christmas market has been rescheduled to December 14th and 15th.”

“Our Christmas market will retain its magic, now even more special due to the rescheduling.”

Jesmond Food Market at Armstrong Bridge

“The Jesmond Food Market at Armstrong Bridge is regretfully cancelled owing to Storm Darragh’s predicted weather conditions,” a statement read.

Gibside

Gibside National Trust property closed on Saturday due to adverse weather conditions.

A spokesperson said: “Ticket holders for Father Christmas events will receive updates shortly. Safety remains our primary concern.”

Alnwick Garden

Treehouse, Lilidorei, and Alnwick Garden, were closed on Saturday, December 7.

In a post on Facebook, a spokesperson said: “Pre-booked ticket holders for Lilidorei events will be contacted directly for rescheduling options.”

Alnwick Markets

Alnwick’s Christmas market, which was scheduled to be held on December 7, was cancelled.

The organizers’ wrote on Facebook: “In light of inclement weather, the market organizers have made the difficult decision to cancel the event.”

Storm Darragh (known as Storm Xaveria in Germany) is a extra tropical cyclone which is currently over the British Isles.

The storm has been causing widespread destruction across the UK and Europe, resulting in at least two fatalities and over 1.5 million properties without power.

The storm’s strong winds, heavy rain, and flooding have disrupted daily life, with red and orange weather warnings issued for various regions.

Wales: Red weather warnings with winds reaching up to 93mph

England: Strong winds and heavy rain caused significant disruptions, with several flights cancelled and roads closed

Northern Ireland: Yellow weather warning with gusts reaching up to 80mph.

Scotland: Strong winds caused disruptions, with several trees uprooted and roofs damaged.

Power Outages

Over 1.5 million properties are now without power, with 174,288 still without power as of 7 p.m. on December 7.

The Energy Networks Association reported that 80% of homes affected by the storm have been reconnected.

Other European Countries that Storm Darragh affected

Storm Darragh has also affected other European countries, including:

France: Météo-France issued amber wind alerts, with gusts reaching up to 159 km/h.

Ireland: Met Éireann issued red wind warnings, with gusts reaching up to 141 km/h.

Netherlands: The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute issued a code yellow warning.

The storm’s impact shall continue, with hazardous traveling conditions, fallen trees, and power outages predicted, according to a report
