Residents of Akure, the Ondo State capital, witnessed a tense atmosphere as students took to the streets in protest.

The protest was led by members of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Joint Campus Council, Ondo Axis.

The students voiced their dissatisfaction with the increasing insecurity in the state, particularly the frequent incidents of kidnapping.

They blocked major roads across Akure, halting traffic and causing significant disruptions to movement within the city.

Several videos trending on social media showed the students carrying placards and chanting protest songs.

The placards bore messages such as “We Need Security” and “Stop the Killings Now” to express their frustration.

The students decried the state government’s failure to ensure the safety of its citizens and called for immediate intervention.

One of the leaders of the protest explained that the action was necessary due to repeated attacks on students in transit.

He emphasized that the group would not back down until the government responded meaningfully to their demands.

The protest remained largely peaceful but triggered tension among residents and business owners in the affected areas.

Many business outlets temporarily closed their shops as a precautionary measure while the protest was ongoing.

Motorists and commuters were stranded for several hours due to road blockades by the demonstrators.

Security operatives were later deployed to monitor the protest and ensure that it did not degenerate into violence.

As of press time, the state government had not issued an official statement in response to the students’ action.

The protest traces to the increasing insecurity faced by residents of Ondo State in recent months.

There have been multiple reports of kidnappings, especially on highways connecting Akure to nearby communities.

Students and travelers have been among the major victims of these rising criminal activities.

Many families have been forced to pay ransom for kidnapped loved ones in recent weeks.

The government’s silence and perceived inaction have heightened public anxiety and dissatisfaction across the state.

The recent protest may be a sign of growing unrest if swift action is not taken by relevant authorities.
