The final funeral rites of late Pope Francis began on Saturday April 26, 2025, at St Peter’s Basilica in Rome.

The Vatican announced the commencement of the solemn event in the early hours of the day.

Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals, is presiding over the requiem mass.

The liturgy is being broadcast live on Facebook, YouTube, and other official Vatican media platforms.

Crowds gathered early at St Peter’s Square to pay their last respects to the beloved pontiff.

Earlier, Diaspora Digital Media (DDM), reported that Pope Francis died on Easter Monday at the age of 88 after battling multiple health issues.

The Vatican confirmed that he suffered a stroke, coma, and later heart failure before passing away.

His death ended a transformative papacy that lasted over a decade, marked by bold reforms and advocacy for the marginalized.

In accordance with his wishes, Pope Francis will be buried at the Basilica of St. Mary Major.

Specifically, he will be laid to rest in the Pauline Chapel, a place of deep historical and spiritual significance.

The chapel houses the ancient icon of Maria Salus Populi Romani, a revered symbol of protection for the people of Rome.

The decision to bury him there followed a personal request made in his Spiritual Testament.

The Vatican disclosed that the Pope had expressed his desire to rest near the sacred icon during his final days.

Pope Francis had been in and out of hospital since February 14, battling deteriorating health.

Despite his ailments, he continued to lead the Church with strength and humility until his final days.

Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, during his homily, praised the late pontiff’s compassion, humility, and courage.

He said, “Pope Francis taught us to love unconditionally and serve selflessly. He was a shepherd close to his flock.”
