Tension in Isi-Uzo: Eha-Amufu Women Protest Against Fulani Herdsmen Attacks

A massive protest erupted today at Eha-Amufu in Isi-Uzo Local Government Area (LGA) of Enugu State, as women took to the streets in anguish and outrage, demanding urgent government intervention over what they described as unrelenting attacks by Fulani herdsmen.
With tears and desperation, the protesters decried the brutal violence, sexual assaults, and destruction of farmlands that have crippled their communities, leaving their husbands and sons too terrified to farm.
“Our women are being raped by Fulani herdsmen! Our husbands don’t go to the farm anymore, our sons don’t go to the farm anymore! When women go to the farm, they are beaten, raped, and after that, the rapists insert sticks into their private parts!” the women cried out in unison.
A Plea for Government Action
The protesting women called on Governor Peter Mbah to take decisive action, urging him to follow the footsteps of Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, by ordering a full-scale operation to ransack the forests and flush out the armed herdsmen terrorizing their communities.
“Governor Soludo took action in Anambra. He cleared the forests of kidnappers. Why can’t our governor do the same with these herdsmen? We are suffering! Our farms are destroyed, our daughters are no longer safe!” a protester lamented.
The protesters also accused the herdsmen of not only raping and brutalizing women but also wielding sophisticated weapons to instill fear in the men, effectively taking control of farmlands and rendering many households economically paralyzed.
A Growing Security Crisis in Enugu State
Isi-Uzo LGA, particularly Eha-Amufu, has become one of the most volatile areas in Enugu State, with repeated reports of deadly clashes between armed herdsmen and local farmers.
Despite past security interventions, the attacks have persisted, forcing many residents to abandon their lands.
Community leaders have repeatedly warned that without urgent action, the situation could escalate into a full-blown humanitarian crisis, with food shortages and displacement looming.
What This Means
Threat to Food Security: With farmlands abandoned, agricultural production in Isi-Uzo is at risk, threatening food supply in the state.
Breakdown of Law and Order: The unchecked presence of armed groups in forests poses a serious security threat beyond Isi-Uzo.
Government’s Response Under Scrutiny: Enugu State residents are watching to see if Governor Mbah will take bold action or allow the crisis to fester.
Echoes of Anambra’s Strategy: Will Enugu adopt the Soludo approach of forcefully clearing criminal hideouts, or will the herdsmen continue to operate unchecked?
Conclusion
The protest in Eha-Amufu is not just about today’s pain—it is a desperate cry for survival.
As the crisis deepens, the ball is now in the court of the Enugu State Government to either take decisive action or risk further turmoil.
For the women of Isi-Uzo, the message is clear: “We cannot continue to live in fear. The government must act—now.”
