The political tempo in Rivers State is rising as former Minister of Transportation and ex-Governor of the state, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, prepares to speak to his supporters in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, July 23, 2025.
This development comes weeks after he officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Amaechi recently returned from Daura, where he attended the funeral of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Sources close to him revealed that the upcoming meeting may mark a turning point in his political journey.
All Signs Point to ADC Defection
A reliable insider said Amaechi is likely to announce his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a party that is gaining momentum among disenchanted APC and PDP supporters.
The source added that Amaechi would not move alone. Many of his loyalists, including those from both major parties, are expected to join him.
One senior APC member, speaking anonymously, said the rising frustration with both APC and PDP in Rivers has created room for a third-force movements.
“The marginalization of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the internal crises in both parties have made people lose hope,” the source said.
“The ADC is now a viable alternative. With someone like Amaechi leading the charge, it could reshape the state’s politics.”
He added that the ongoing political crisis, particularly the legal battles over the governor’s powers, has deepened public resentment.
Many Rivers residents believe governance has failed to meet their expectations.
2027 Presidency May Be on Amaechi’s Mind
Within the new coalition, some sources believe Amaechi is eyeing the presidency under the ADC banner.
They point to his broad national influence, political experience, and grassroots appeal as key assets.
In his July 1 resignation letter addressed to the APC chairman in Ward 8, Ubima, Ikwerre Local Government Area, Amaechi cited the party’s failures and betrayal of its founding values.
He pledged to work with “patriotic Nigerians” to rescue the country from what he called the APC’s “symbol of failure and anguish.”
Stakeholders Rally Around Amaechi
Support is growing. Leaders from Host Communities of Niger Delta have pledged to back Amaechi’s next move, including a possible 2027 presidential run.
All eyes now turn to Wednesday’s event in Port Harcourt, where Amaechi is expected to unveil his political future and possibly, a new national ambition.
