Tinubu appoints 6 new Chief Medical Directors for federal hospitals

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu makes new appointments

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed six medical professionals as Chief Medical Directors (CMDs) to lead federal Government -owned hospitals across Nigeria.

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, disclosed this in an official statement released on Friday, March 7, 2025.

Mr. Onanuga said that the move is part of President Tinubu’s administration’s efforts to enhance the healthcare system and ensure quality medical services.

The newly appointed CMDs include:

  1. Prof. Olusegun Sylvester Ojo was assigned to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Akure, Ondo State.
    According to reports, Prof. Ojo previously served as the pioneer CMD of the Ondo State Specialist Hospital.
    Ojo promised to bring a wealth of experience to his new position.
  2. Prof. Yusuf Mohammed Abdullahi was reappointed for the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe.
    Mr. Onanuga noted that Prof. Abdullahi’s reappointed is a testament to his exceptional leadership and outstanding first-term performance.
    His reappointment underscores his contributions to the hospital’s growth and service delivery.
  3. Dr. Dauda Abubakar Katagum was confirmed as the substantive CMD of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Azare, Bauchi State, following his tenure as Acting CMD.
  4. Dr. Ikrama Hassan was appointed for the newly upgraded Federal Teaching Hospital, Lafia, Nasarawa State.
    A seasoned consultant physician, Dr. Hassan previously held the position of Medical Director at the Dalhatu Ibrahim Arab Specialist Hospital before its elevation to a teaching hospital.
  5. Dr. Ali Mohammed Ramat, a consultant orthopaedic and spine surgeon was appointed for the newly established National Orthopedic Hospital in Maiduguri, Borno State.
  6. Dr. Haruna Abubakar Shehu, a Consultant Family Physician, will assume the role of CMD at the Federal Medical Centre, Kafanchan, Kaduna State.

According to the presidency, all appointments are for a tenure of four years effective from the respective dates of assumption of office.

Prof. Abdullahi’s second and final term at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, commenced on September 5, 2024.

Dr. Katagum’s tenure at the Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital, Azare, on the other hand, officially took effect on December 6, 2024.

President Tinubu extended his congratulations to the appointees.

He urged them to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, accountability, and service delivery in their respective institutions.

He reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare infrastructure.

Tinubu, thereby, ensured accessible, high-quality medical services for all citizens.

Federal hospitals in Nigeria are healthcare institutions owned and managed by the federal government.

  1. University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City, Edo State.
  2. University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Calabar, Cross River State.
  3. University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada, Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
  4. University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Oyo State.
  5. Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife, Osun State.
  6. University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Ilorin, Kwara State.
  7. Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Irrua, Edo State.
  8. University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu State.
  9. Jos University Teaching Hospital, Jos, Plateau State.
  10. Aminu Kano University Teaching Hospital, Kano, Kano State.
  11. Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Lagos, Lagos State.
  12. University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, Maiduguri, Borno State.
  13. Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, Anambra State.
  14. University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
  15. Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto, Sokoto State.
  16. University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
  17. Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria, Kaduna State.
  18. Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.
  19. Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, Bauchi State.
  20. National Hospital, Abuja, Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
  21. Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri, Imo State.
  22. Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia, Abia State.
  23. Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta, Ogun State.
  24. Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Yaba, Lagos State.
  25. National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi (NOHI) Lagos state.
