Tinubu Approves Two-Year Extension for Surveyor-General Adebomehin

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a two-year tenure extension for the Surveyor-General of the Federation (SGoF), Mr. Abuduganiyu Adebomehin, to enable him to complete key national reforms in the geospatial and land management sectors.

According to a statement released by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the extension will take effect from January 5, 2026.

The Presidency explained that the decision followed the recent transfer of the Office of the Surveyor-General of the Federation (OSGOF) to the Presidency, reflecting the administration’s plan to strengthen national land administration and infrastructure coordination.

Mr. Adebomehin, who was originally appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in January 2022, has been leading major reforms in Nigeria’s geospatial data systems. These reforms are part of efforts to modernize national mapping and improve land administration practices in line with international standards.

The President, according to the statement, wants Mr. Adebomehin to consolidate and complete ongoing initiatives within the next two years.

These include critical projects in national land management, highway and abutting land coordination, erosion control programs, and reclamation projects that are of strategic national importance.

“The Surveyor-General has already initiated significant reforms across geospatial data systems, which the President is keen to see completed,” the statement said.

President Tinubu emphasized that these reforms will provide an accurate geospatial foundation for infrastructure development, climate resilience, and environmental sustainability across Nigeria.

The move aligns with the administration’s broader goal to improve data-driven decision-making in urban planning, agriculture, mining, and security mapping. By leveraging technology, OSGOF is expected to enhance Nigeria’s capacity for efficient land use, resource monitoring, and infrastructure tracking nationwide.

Mr. Adebomehin’s leadership in the past three years has been credited with repositioning OSGOF for innovation, including partnerships with international mapping agencies and the development of modern survey equipment across states.

His renewed tenure is expected to reinforce these achievements and ensure the institutionalization of ongoing reforms before the next leadership transition.

With this approval, President Tinubu has again signaled his administration’s commitment to continuity in public sector innovation and effective policy implementation through result-oriented leadership.
