President Tinubu drop five Ministers, appoint seven others.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has made sweeping changes to the leadership of several federal universities in Nigeria.

At the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA), now known as Yakubu Gowon University, the entire governing council has been dissolved, and Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi has been relieved of her duties as Vice-Chancellor.

This move is expected to have far-reaching implications for the institution.

Senator Lanre Tejuoso has been appointed as the new Pro-Chancellor of Yakubu Gowon University, bringing his wealth of experience and expertise to the role.

Meanwhile, Professor Lar Patricia Manko will serve as Acting Vice Chancellor for a six-month term, although she will not be eligible to apply for the substantive Vice Chancellor position when it becomes available.

In another major development, Professor Polycarp Emeka Chigbu has been removed as Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), despite his tenure not being due to end until February 14.

Professor Oguejiofu T. Ujam has been appointed as his successor for six months.

The leadership changes at UNN extend beyond the Vice-Chancellor position, with Gen. Ike Nwachukwu being reassigned to Pro-Chancellor at the University of Uyo.

Engineer Olubunmi Kayode Ojo has been appointed as the new Pro-Chancellor of UNN, while Professor Zubairu Tajo Abdullahi has been appointed to succeed Ojo at the Federal University of Lokoja.

Other appointments include Senator Sani Stores as the new Pro-Chancellor of Alvan Ikoku University of Education, succeeding Senator Joy Emordi, and Barrister Olugbenga Kukoyi as the new Pro-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Anambra State.

These changes are part of President Tinubu’s “efforts to revitalize Nigeria’s higher education system through dynamic leadership and accountability.”

According to a statement issued by the President’s spokesman, Chief Bayo Onanuga, “the restructuring aims to strengthen governance and academic excellence within Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.”

All appointments and reassignments are effective immediately.
