Reality TV star Ijeoma Josephina Otabor, popularly known as Phyna, has marked the fourth anniversary of her Big Brother Naija victory after adding another major milestone to her career with a historic triumph in the boxing ring.

Phyna celebrated the significance of October 2 after defeating Nollywood actress Nkechi Blessing in a celebrity boxing bout held at the Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, during Balmoral Promotions’ Chaos in the Ring event.

The reality star emerged victorious in the fourth and final round of the scheduled contest, becoming the winner of what was reported as Nigeria’s first female celebrity boxing bout under the Chaos in the Ring series.

For Phyna, the timing of the achievement made the victory particularly significant. She won the seventh season of Big Brother Naija, tagged Level Up, on October 2, 2022. Four years later, the same date provided an opportunity for her to reflect on the journey from reality television to another highly publicised competitive platform.

In a post shared on Friday, Phyna described October 2 as a date that would remain special to her because it now represents two major moments in her public career.

She recalled her reality TV victory while celebrating her success against Nkechi Blessing, describing the boxing achievement as another historic chapter.

Phyna’s transition from reality television to boxing attracted considerable attention because she entered a completely different competitive environment. Rather than relying on the popularity and entertainment format associated with Big Brother Naija, she had to prepare for a physical contest against another well-known entertainer.

The fight followed weeks of tension between Phyna and Nkechi Blessing, with their disagreements playing a major role in the build-up to the contest. The two celebrities exchanged words publicly before eventually agreeing to settle their differences inside the ring.

Their rivalry generated further attention during promotional activities for the event, including public appearances and face-off sessions ahead of the bout.

Once the fight began, reports said Phyna remained composed during the early stages while Nkechi Blessing attempted to press forward. Phyna maintained her movement and appeared to conserve energy before increasing the pressure in the closing stage of the contest.

The decisive moment came in the fourth round when Phyna landed the punch that sent Nkechi Blessing to the canvas. The actress could not beat the referee’s count, bringing the scheduled four-round contest to an end and handing Phyna the victory.

The victory came with substantial rewards. Reports said Phyna received a championship belt, a new car and ₦50 million in prize money following the contest.

Beyond the prize money and recognition, the victory has also opened discussion about Phyna’s future in boxing. Following the contest, she indicated an interest in pursuing the sport beyond the celebrity bout.

She also turned her attention towards another potential opponent, actress Etinosa Idemudia, whom she challenged after the fight. Etinosa, who watched the contest from ringside, accepted the challenge, creating the possibility of another female celebrity boxing encounter.

Phyna’s latest achievement adds another dimension to a career that has already moved through several areas of entertainment. Her rise to national prominence came after she won Big Brother Naija Season 7 in 2022, but her activities since then have continued to keep her in the public spotlight.

Her boxing appearance also formed part of a wider entertainment programme at Chaos in the Ring. Skit maker Carter Efe defeated Speed Darlington in another celebrity contest, while Ghanaian boxer Seth “Freezy Macbones” Gyimah defeated Nigeria’s Godday “Zodsolo” Appah in the professional main event.

For Phyna, however, the night carried a more personal significance. The victory arrived almost exactly four years after the moment that established her as a major reality television personality.

What began with a Big Brother Naija victory on October 2, 2022, has now been followed by another notable achievement on the same date. Her knockout victory over Nkechi Blessing has therefore given the former reality TV winner another milestone to celebrate while introducing her to a new competitive arena.

With Phyna expressing interest in professional boxing and Etinosa Idemudia accepting her challenge, her latest appearance in the ring could potentially become more than a one-off celebrity contest. For now, though, her victory over Nkechi Blessing has given her a place in the history of Balmoral Promotions’ celebrity boxing series and added a remarkable new chapter to her entertainment career.
