Tragic bus crash claims lives of four seminarians in Cross River

Enugu, Nigeria — On Saturday, May 3, 2025, a devastating accident killed four seminarians from the Enugu Catholic Church during their trip to Obudu Ranch Resort in Cross River State.

The crash occurred near Ikwete village, close to the Bottom Hill of the resort in Obanliku Local Government Area.

Eyewitnesses reported that the seminarians, accompanied by a Reverend Father, had just finished touring the popular destination when their bus experienced brake failure.

Consequently, the vehicle lost control and plunged into a valley, leading to the immediate deaths of four individuals while injuring nine others.

Currently, the injured victims are receiving medical treatment at a hospital in Obudu.

Meanwhile, the Cross River State Governor, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, expressed deep sorrow over the incident in a press statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Nsa Gill.

He stated, “We are heartbroken by this tragic accident at Ikwete community near Obudu Ranch Resort.”

Additionally, Governor Otu extended his condolences to the bereaved families, assuring them of the government’s support.

He emphasized that emergency teams, including Nigerian Army personnel, responded swiftly to the scene.

Preliminary investigations indicate that brake failure caused the accident.

Governor Otu stressed the importance of safety, saying, “We prioritize the safety of all visitors and will review existing measures.”

He further urged tourists to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and to follow safety guidelines.

The Obudu Ranch Resort, a top Nigerian tourist destination, now faces scrutiny following this tragedy.

Authorities have promised a thorough investigation to prevent future accidents.

Furthermore, the government will provide updates as the inquiry progresses.
