Pakistan army claims India's missile was targeted at a mosque

Tensions between India and Pakistan have taken a dangerous turn on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, as a missile reportedly launched from Indian territory struck inside Pakistan’s borders.

According to a senior official from the Pakistani military, the missile directly hit a mosque in a populated area.

Civilians had reportedly gathered at the mosque when the strike happened.

Islamabad described the incident as a grave provocation and a potential war crime.

According to him, it had further inflamed the already volatile relationship between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.

The missile strike occurred late in the evening and is said to have impacted a civilian area in eastern Pakistan.

Eyewitnesses in the vicinity reported a loud explosion followed by the sound of emergency response teams rushing to the scene.

Images circulating on local news channels show severe structural damage to a religious site.

This has since been confirmed by Pakistani officials to be a mosque.

Rescue workers were seen pulling injured individuals from the rubble, as residents mourned what they described as a deliberate and devastating attack on a place of worship.

A spokesperson for the Pakistan Armed Forces addressed the media in an urgent press conference.

He condemned the strike and alleged that India had deliberately targeted the mosque despite it being clearly identifiable as a civilian structure.

“This is not only a violation of Pakistani sovereignty but also a direct attack on innocent lives and a religious site,” he said.

“At the time of the strike, civilians were inside the mosque for evening prayers. This action cannot go unanswered.”

The official further stated that Pakistan reserves the right to respond “at a time and place of its choosing.”

He also emphasized that the Pakistani military is fully prepared for any scenario.

He urged the international community to take immediate notice of what he described as an “escalation beyond the norms of conflict.”

The spokesperson suggested that the attack may breach international humanitarian law.

So far, Indian authorities have not issued a formal statement acknowledging the missile strike.

The Indian government has remained tight-lipped, with officials in New Delhi neither confirming nor denying the reports.

Indian media, however, has speculated that the strike may have been part of a targeted operation against militant activity near the border.

Although this has not been officially substantiated.

The Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned the Indian High Commissioner in Islamabad to lodge a formal protest.

In a strongly worded statement, Pakistan condemned the attack as “reckless, irresponsible, and a clear violation of international norms and bilateral agreements.”

The statement also called on India to provide an explanation and take full responsibility for what Islamabad views as a premeditated act of aggression.

Local hospitals near the site of the explosion have reported multiple casualties, with both injuries and fatalities among the civilian population.

Medical staff are said to be overwhelmed, and authorities have appealed for blood donations and medical supplies.

Human rights organizations in Pakistan have reportedly also begun documenting the incident.

They are calling for an independent investigation to determine whether the missile strike constitutes a war crime.

The international response has so far been one of concern and caution.

Representatives from the United Nations, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and several major world powers have urged both India and Pakistan to exercise restraint and avoid further escalation.

Some have called for an impartial investigation to ascertain the facts and assess accountability.

This incident comes amid a period of heightened tensions between the two nations, particularly over long-standing disputes in the Kashmir region.

Skirmishes along the Line of Control (LoC) have occurred frequently.

However, the targeting of civilian infrastructure — particularly a religious site — marks a significant and dangerous shift.

As both governments weigh their next steps, the region and the world watch anxiously.

For now, the focus in Pakistan remains on rescue operations and mourning the loss of civilian life, while the potential for further conflict looms large.

The Pakistani military has reiterated its readiness to defend the country, and calls for justice for the victims of the missile strike are growing louder both domestically and abroad.
