Tributes Pour In as Kannywood Actress Wasila Isma’il Dies at 46

Veteran Kannywood actress Wasila Isma’il has passed away at the age of 46, leaving the Hausa film industry in deep mourning.

Her death was confirmed on Sunday, May 24, 2026, by her ex-husband, Al-Amin Chiroma, who revealed that she died after a prolonged illness. According to him, the actress passed away at the Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN) Hospital.

Announcing the sad news, Chiroma wrote, “Innalillahi Wainna Ilaihirrajiun. Wasila Isma’il is dead.” His statement has since sparked an outpouring of grief from fans, colleagues, and members of the Kannywood community.

Wasila Isma’il was a respected figure in the Hausa film industry, known for her compelling performances and lasting impact on Kannywood. She began her acting career in 1998 with a role in the film “Jinin Masoya,” before rising to prominence a year later in the movie “Wasila,” originally titled “Jamila.”

Interestingly, the title of the film that brought her fame was changed at her request to protect her personal reputation. The name “Wasila” would later become synonymous with her identity, cementing her place in the industry.

Throughout her career, she featured alongside notable Kannywood stars, including Ali Nuhu, who played her on-screen husband in the breakthrough film directed by Yakubu Lere.

The late actress is survived by her children, who now carry on her legacy.
