Troops Warn Against Cattle Rustling, Destruction Of Farmlands In Plateau

JOS, PLATEAU STATE – The Military Joint Task Force under Operation Enduring Peace has issued a strong warning to residents of five local government areas in Plateau State, cautioning against cattle rustling and the destruction of farmlands during the ongoing farming season.

The task force declared that anyone caught engaging in acts capable of disturbing peace, including livestock theft or deliberate destruction of agricultural produce, would be dealt with decisively in line with its rules of engagement.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports that the warning comes amid renewed efforts by security agencies to stabilize farming communities and prevent seasonal clashes between herders and farmers, which have historically affected food production and rural security in the state.

The military operation, identified as Operation Enduring Peace, said it has observed rising concerns in some communities over incidents of cattle rustling, farm encroachment, and retaliatory attacks that threaten peaceful coexistence.

Security Concerns In Farming Communities

The task force noted that Plateau State remains one of the key agricultural hubs in Nigeria, where farming activities are critical to local livelihoods and national food supply.

It warned that any disruption to farming activities through vandalism or illegal grazing practices could worsen food insecurity and increase tensions between rural communities.

According to security officials, intelligence reports have indicated attempts by some individuals to exploit the farming season to engage in unlawful activities that could escalate conflict in affected areas.

Call For Community Cooperation

The military urged traditional rulers, community leaders, youth groups, and farmers’ associations to collaborate with security agencies by reporting suspicious movements and preventing criminal elements from operating within their communities.
