An internal United States government document has revealed major changes in the country’s diplomatic strategy.

Diaspora digital media (DDM) gathered that the Trump administration is reportedly considering shutting down nearly 30 U.S. embassies and consulates worldwide.

This proposal includes diplomatic posts in several African countries, such as the Republic of Congo and South Sudan.

CNN first reported the plan on Wednesday, citing a leaked internal document from the U.S. State Department.

Among the African nations affected are Lesotho, Central African Republic, and the Republic of Congo.

A U.S. consulate in South Africa is also listed for possible closure.

In total, the document recommends shutting down 10 embassies and 17 consulates across multiple continents.

These closures span Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean.

Other countries affected include Malta, Luxembourg, France, Germany, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the United Kingdom, and South Korea.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to reduce federal government spending.

The document links the proposed closures to the Department of Government Efficiency.

This department reportedly enjoys support from billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk.

It is focused on minimizing the size and cost of federal operations.

The Trump administration has long supported cutting foreign commitments and reducing federal expenses.

During his previous term, Trump pushed for smaller government and limited U.S. involvement abroad.

He also oversaw significant budget reductions at the State Department.

The current proposal aligns with that earlier approach to streamline federal services.

The leaked document also mentions downsizing U.S. operations in Somalia and Iraq.

These two countries have been central to America’s counterterrorism operations.

Reducing presence in such regions may weaken intelligence-gathering and security partnerships.

Analysts have raised concerns about losing influence in fragile and volatile regions.

As of now, the State Department has not confirmed the report.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has not issued an official statement regarding the proposal.

A spokesperson for the department declined to comment on the leaked information.

The potential shutdown has sparked concern among diplomats and foreign policy experts.

Critics believe the closures could damage relationships with key international partners.

Embassies serve vital roles, including issuing visas and supporting American citizens abroad.

They also facilitate economic, development, and security cooperation with host nations.

Shutting them down could hinder U.S. diplomatic reach and effectiveness.

African governments have not publicly responded to the reported list.

However, local diplomatic sources describe the proposal as troubling and short-sighted.

There are fears that rival powers like China and Russia may fill any void left behind.

Both countries have been expanding their influence aggressively across Africa in recent years.

Observers warn the U.S. risks losing long-term strategic ground on the continent.

The proposal represents one of the largest cuts to American diplomatic infrastructure in decades.

A final decision on the matter has yet to be announced by the Trump administration.

Until then, the global diplomatic community remains watchful of what could become a turning point in U.S. foreign policy.
