United States President Donald Trump has announced an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. A source close to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the news came as a surprise.

“Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine. Both parties have agreed. Do not break it!” Trump wrote on social media on Sunday morning.

Kyiv says it learnt of energy ceasefire from the post

Another Ukrainian official said Kyiv “just read it” as everyone else did. The White House and the Kremlin have not said how the agreement was reached or what comes next.

Zelensky later said on X that he had spoken with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Finnish President Alexander Stubb and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte about the news.

“Ukraine supports the ceasefire, and it is important that Russia support it as well. We are awaiting details from the American side,” he wrote.

Earlier on Sunday, Zelensky told ABC News that his country was open to the idea. “Don’t attack us. Don’t kill our children. We will stop attacking your diesel. And I think it’s fair, fair deal,” he said.

Russian strikes continue after energy ceasefire call

However, Zelensky said Russia kept hitting Ukraine’s energy sites. They included a power plant in Kyiv and facilities in the Kharkiv region. “And all of this happened AFTER the President of the United States made his statement about an energy ceasefire,” he wrote.

The announcement came days after Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The two men had announced a controversial deal to supply world markets with Russian diesel.

Talks between top Ukrainian and American officials, including Jared Kushner and special envoy Steve Witkoff, began in Miami on Friday as the diesel deal was announced.

Zelensky criticised the diesel arrangement and said it would prolong the war. Trump replied that Ukraine should “get a new leader who can make a deal.”

Why energy sites matter in the war

Russia has targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure since the early months of the full-scale invasion in 2022.

Ukraine later began striking Russian oil refineries with home-made drones fired deep inside Russia.

Both sides have stepped up the air war in recent months, while the front lines have barely moved.

Trump has voiced frustration over the Ukrainian strikes. Even so, there have been several in the past week, as Kyiv considers the refineries vital to the Kremlin’s war machine.
