U.S. Police Arrest Nigerian Woman for Murder of 9-Yr-Old Daughter Left in Hot Car

A heartbreaking tragedy has rocked both the Nigerian and American communities after a 9-year-old girl, Oluwasikemi Akayinode, died inside a locked car during a scorching 99°F Texas afternoon.
Her mother, 36-year-old Gbemisola Akayinode, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder.
According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred on July 1, 2025, when Akayinode allegedly left her daughter inside the vehicle for more than eight hours while she “attended to personal matters.”
Investigators revealed that the mother had covered the car’s windows with shades and left behind food, melatonin, a portable fan, and iced water.
However, despite these items, police said the car’s interior temperature soared to deadly levels, leading to the child’s death from hyperthermia.
On October 17, 2025, the Harris County Medical Examiner ruled the death a homicide, prompting Akayinode’s immediate arrest.
She is currently being held on a $500,000 bail.
Detectives disclosed that her initial statements contained inconsistencies, suggesting that the child was left unattended far longer than she admitted.
The tragic case has sparked widespread outrage and debate on X (formerly Twitter).
While many users expressed grief and disbelief, others condemned the act as “unforgivable negligence.”
A few, however, pointed to cultural and systemic issues highlighting the struggles of African immigrants balancing work, stress, and limited childcare options in the U.S.
Child safety advocates are using this case to raise awareness about hot car deaths, which remain a recurring tragedy in the U.S. Statistics from KidsAndCars.org reveal that an average of 37 children die each year from being left in overheated vehicles.
Experts warn that even with slightly open windows, a car’s interior can hit 140°F within 30 minutes, creating a fatal heat trap.
As legal proceedings move forward, the heartbreaking loss of Oluwasikemi serves as a painful reminder of the dangers of leaving children in vehicles—even briefly.
For the Nigerian community abroad, the case also reopens critical conversations about mental health, parental stress, and isolation among immigrant families adapting to new environments.

How Nigerian TikToker Geh Geh Made ₦45 Million in One Night
A Nigerian TikTok sensation known as “Geh Geh” has stunned the internet after pulling in over $30,000 from a single live session that attracted more than 177,000 viewers.
The young entertainer, who calls his platform the “University of Wisdom and Understanding,” has quickly built a cult following with his raw and unfiltered lectures about women, money, and survival in Nigeria.
During the live broadcast on Thursday, August 21, viewers showered him with virtual gifts that he later calculated to be worth over $30,000.
The milestone instantly pushed him into the spotlight as one of Nigeria’s fastest-rising online personalities.
Reacting in disbelief after the stream, Geh Geh said:
“More than 177,000 people watch my lectures today. Jesus! University of wisdom and understanding, the only university where once you graduate, woman go fear to ask you for money.”
Despite not having a formal education, Geh Geh proudly calls himself “the first illiterate to find a university in the history of Nigeria.” In a video after the viral live, he reminded fans of his humble background:
“I no be graduate too, but by the grace of God, I don find school. I be orphan, but now Nigerians don show me love.”
The TikTok star admitted he was overwhelmed by the generosity of his supporters.
“See gift I made over… more gift when they give me today is worth about $30,000. I no go take this love for granted, because I no really do anything for am.”
His rise has been hailed as proof of how social media is transforming lives in Nigeria. With no degree, no rich background, and no industry connection, Geh Geh has managed to build a fanbase that now calls themselves “students” of his unusual university.
Still, his controversial views on women and relationships continue to spark heated debates. While some dismiss his advice as reckless, others insist his boldness speaks directly to Nigeria’s frustrated youth.
Reflecting on his sudden fame, Geh Geh compared himself to great thinkers:
“If Nigeria be country wey value great people, by now them suppose dey compare people like me with Aristotle, Wole Soyinka, Einstein… but I thank God say people dey see my head and my own difference.”
From an orphan with no prospects to a viral star earning in dollars, Geh Geh’s story has become one of digital empowerment.
His journey shows how platforms like TikTok are creating new forms of fame, money, and influence for Nigerians especially those once written off by society.

Court Fines Man for Using AI to Create Nude Deepfake of Woman
A 25-year-old man from Glasgow created nude deepfakes of a woman he knew in high school and sent them to his friends.
The man, Callum Brooks from Easterhouse, appeared before the Sheriff Court and admitted his crime. On 24 June 2022, he used artificial intelligence (AI) to digitally alter two photographs the woman had shared on social media. He changed the images to show her naked without her knowledge or consent.
Victim Felt Humiliated
The woman discovered the deepfakes and felt “immediately embarrassed and humiliated.” Prosecutors said the offence ranks among the first deepfake cases to reach a Scottish court.
Brooks admitted he disclosed the intimate images without consent. The Sheriff fined him £335 for the offence.
Brooks told the court that his actions carried “no sexual element.” The Crown accepted his explanation.
Deepfakes and AI Abuse
Deepfakes use advanced software to convincingly replace one person’s likeness with another. While creators sometimes use the technology for entertainment or parody, abusers now use it for harassment, blackmail, and misinformation.
Brooks deliberately took social media photos of his victim, turned them into sexually explicit content, and circulated them among his friends.
Lawmakers Respond to Growing Threat
The UK government promised earlier this year to create a specific offence targeting the creation of sexually explicit deepfakes. Current law already criminalises the sharing of intimate images without consent, but campaigners argue that new offences must address AI-driven image abuse directly.
In Scotland, First Minister John Swinney confirmed that his government will study whether Scotland needs its own legislation. He also said ministers will work with Westminster to extend any new laws north of the border.
A Global Challenge
Experts warn that deepfake abuse represents a growing global problem. Easy-to-use AI tools allow anyone to create fake explicit material, leaving victims open to humiliation, blackmail, and reputational damage.
In this case, Brooks caused serious harm to a woman he once knew. Lawmakers now face pressure to act quickly before more victims suffer the same fate
