The 2026/27 UEFA Champions League league phase has produced several mouthwatering fixtures after the draw was completed on Thursday, with Arsenal set to host Real Madrid while Manchester City and Aston Villa were both handed meetings with defending champions Paris Saint-Germain.
The draw has created a number of high profile encounters involving the Premier League’s representatives, setting the stage for an exciting return to Europe’s biggest club competition.
Arsenal, who reached last season’s Champions League final before losing to PSG on penalties, will face Real Madrid at home in one of the standout fixtures of the league phase. The meeting will also bring together two clubs with significant European pedigree and adds another major challenge to Arsenal’s campaign.
The Gunners will also face Bayern Munich away, while Borussia Dortmund, Real Betis, Lille, Napoli, Sabah FC and Slavia Prague complete their eight opponents.
For Real Madrid, the Arsenal clash will provide another difficult test under returning manager Jose Mourinho. The Spanish giants will also face Bayern Munich’s rivals from the Premier League, with their other opponents including Inter Milan, PSV Eindhoven, Roma, RB Leipzig, Shakhtar Donetsk, LASK and AEK Athens.
Manchester City were handed one of the toughest schedules in the competition after being drawn against defending champions PSG and Spanish giants Barcelona.
City will host PSG before travelling to Barcelona, creating two blockbuster fixtures for Pep Guardiola’s side. Their remaining opponents are Sporting CP, Porto, Napoli, RB Leipzig, AEK Athens and Lens.
The meeting with PSG is particularly intriguing because the French champions defeated Arsenal in last season’s final and will enter the new campaign as the team everyone wants to beat.
PSG’s league phase schedule is packed with difficult opponents. Luis Enrique’s side will face Barcelona, Manchester City and Aston Villa, as well as Roma, Galatasaray, Villarreal, Slovan Bratislava and Como.
Aston Villa have also been handed a challenging return to the Champions League.
The Europa League winners will host PSG and Barcelona during the league phase, giving Unai Emery’s team two opportunities to test themselves against some of Europe’s strongest sides.
Villa will also face Borussia Dortmund, Club Brugge, Slavia Prague, Viking, Feyenoord and PSV Eindhoven. Their return to the competition is therefore likely to be demanding, but the fixtures also offer the club an opportunity to establish themselves among Europe’s elite.
Manchester United, meanwhile, will make their return to the Champions League after missing out on the competition last season.
United were drawn against Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid, giving them two heavyweight opponents during the league phase. They will also play Roma, Sporting CP, RB Leipzig, Villarreal, Sabah FC and Como.
Liverpool have also been handed an interesting schedule, including a trip to Italy to face Inter Milan and a home meeting with Atletico Madrid.
The Reds will additionally face Porto, Club Brugge, Villarreal, Fenerbahce, Lens and LASK.
The new Champions League format means the traditional group stage has been replaced by a single 36 team league table. Each club will play eight matches, with four at home and four away, against opponents drawn from different seeding pots.
The eight highest ranked teams at the end of the league phase will advance directly to the round of 16. Teams finishing from ninth to 24th will enter a knockout play-off, while clubs placed 25th or lower will be eliminated from the competition.
The league phase is scheduled to begin between September 8 and September 10, with the final league phase matches taking place in January 2027.
For Arsenal, the meeting with Real Madrid will arguably be the headline fixture. The Gunners will be hoping to go one step further than last season after suffering heartbreak against PSG in the final.
Real Madrid’s clash with Arsenal will also carry additional intrigue because Mourinho is back in charge of the Spanish giants. The Portuguese coach has already made a strong start to his second spell at Madrid, winning his opening two matches.
The Champions League draw has therefore delivered exactly what supporters hoped for, with several of Europe’s biggest clubs facing each other before the knockout stages even begin.
