Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has provided an encouraging update on Bruno Guimaraes’ fitness ahead of Monday’s Premier League trip to Aston Villa, raising hopes that the Brazilian midfielder could make his competitive debut for the Gunners.
Guimaraes missed Arsenal’s opening league fixture against Coventry City after suffering a minor injury during the Community Shield victory over Manchester City. The £75 million summer signing was substituted at half time in that match and was subsequently left out of Arsenal’s squad for their 3-0 win over Coventry.
However, Arteta has now revealed that the midfielder has returned to training and could be available for selection when Arsenal travel to Villa Park.
The Arsenal boss explained that the club has carefully managed Guimaraes’ workload in recent days as he continues his recovery.
“He’s out on the pitch, he’s been in training sessions,” Arteta said. “But we need to manage the load to get to Monday in the best possible condition to be available to be selected.”
The update will come as a major boost to Arsenal supporters, particularly because Guimaraes was brought to the club to add strength, energy and experience to the midfield.
The Brazilian arrived from Newcastle United during the summer in a major deal and made his first competitive appearance for Arsenal in the Community Shield. Although his outing ended earlier than expected because of the injury, he impressed during his time on the pitch and quickly showed why Arteta wanted him in the squad.
Arsenal managed to overcome his absence against Coventry, producing an impressive 3-0 victory at the Emirates Stadium in their opening Premier League game. Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and captain Martin Odegaard were all on the scoresheet as the Gunners made a strong start to their title defence.
Nevertheless, Guimaraes’ return would give Arteta another important option in midfield as Arsenal prepare for a more difficult test against Aston Villa.
The match at Villa Park is scheduled for Monday, August 31, and will bring together two sides who experienced very different opening weekends. Arsenal began their campaign with a comfortable victory over Coventry, while Aston Villa suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat against Brighton.
Arteta also provided positive news regarding another new signing, Ezri Konsa. The defender recently joined Arsenal from Aston Villa and is available to face his former club.
“Konsa is available. He’s trained really well and he will be available for selection,” Arteta confirmed.
Konsa’s potential debut against Villa adds another interesting storyline to Monday’s fixture. The England international spent several seasons at Villa Park before completing his move to Arsenal, and he could now return to his former club wearing the colours of the visitors.
Arsenal’s defensive options have been stretched by injuries to William Saliba and Jurrien Timber. Arteta therefore sees Konsa as an important addition as the club attempts to maintain its defensive strength during a demanding season.
Timber, meanwhile, is continuing his rehabilitation. Arteta said the Dutch defender is progressing well and that his workload has been increased as he moves closer to a return to full training.
“I’m really pleased with how he’s progressing,” Arteta said, indicating that Timber could take another step forward in his recovery next week.
Saliba remains unavailable, meaning Arsenal will still have to manage their defensive resources carefully.
Despite the injury concerns, the overall picture has improved for Arteta. Guimaraes is potentially available, Konsa is ready for selection and Timber is moving closer to a return.
Arsenal will head to Villa Park hoping to build on their convincing opening-day victory and maintain their early momentum in the Premier League. A win would further strengthen their title defence and provide another indication of the depth and quality available to Arteta.
For Guimaraes, however, the focus will be on whether his recovery progresses sufficiently over the next few days. If he is cleared to play, Monday night could finally provide the Arsenal faithful with their first competitive look at the midfielder in the Premier League.
Arteta will not want to rush the player back, but with Guimaraes already back on the training pitch, Arsenal supporters have reason to be optimistic about his availability for the trip to Villa Park.
