The 2026 summer transfer window has once again demonstrated the enormous financial power of European football, with clubs committing hundreds of millions of euros to strengthen their squads ahead of the new season.
Chelsea currently lead the list of Europe’s biggest transfer spenders, having spent €407.95 million on new players. Tottenham Hotspur follow in second place with €354.7 million, while Arsenal complete the top three with €227.1 million in expenditure.
The figures, reported by Planet Football and published by PUNCH, highlight the continued dominance of Premier League clubs in the European transfer market. Seven of the 10 clubs on the list are from England, although some of the most famous names from Spain and Italy also feature prominently.
Chelsea’s position at the top is particularly striking. The London club have spent €407.95 million on incoming players, comfortably making them the biggest spenders among the 10 clubs. They have also generated €218.1 million from player sales, leaving their net spend at €189.85 million.
Tottenham are second after spending €354.7 million. Spurs have raised €165.55 million through player sales, giving them a net spend of €189.15 million. Their enormous investment reflects the club’s determination to strengthen the squad and compete at a higher level following a busy summer transfer window.
Arsenal occupy third place after spending €227.1 million. The Gunners have generated €46.15 million from outgoing transfers, resulting in a net spend of €180.95 million. Their heavy investment comes as they look to build on their recent success and remain competitive in domestic and European football.
Real Madrid are the highest ranked club outside England, sitting fourth with €225 million spent on new players. The Spanish giants have also generated €58.5 million in transfer income, leaving them with a net spend of €166.5 million.
The presence of Real Madrid among the biggest spenders is hardly surprising given the club’s status and ambitions, but their expenditure remains below that of Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal.
One of the biggest surprises on the list is Ipswich Town, who occupy fifth position after spending €178.35 million. The English club have generated €19.36 million from player sales, leaving their net expenditure at €158.99 million.
Ipswich’s position is particularly notable because they are competing against clubs with considerably greater international profiles and financial resources. Their spending reflects the club’s ambitious approach to squad building.
Manchester United are sixth with €173.2 million spent on new arrivals. The Old Trafford club have also raised €52.15 million through player sales, producing a net spend of €121.05 million.
United’s presence in the top 10 is expected, given the club’s global status and continued efforts to improve its squad. However, their gross expenditure is still significantly below Chelsea’s total.
AC Milan are seventh after spending €160.85 million. The Italian giants have generated €47.5 million from outgoing transfers, leaving a net spend of €113.35 million.
Juventus are another Serie A representative in the ranking. The Turin club sit eighth after spending €157.95 million, while their transfer income stands at €24.4 million. Their resulting net spend is €133.55 million.
Coventry City provide another major surprise in ninth place. The English club have spent €148.55 million on new players and generated only €5.15 million in transfer income, leaving them with a net spend of €143.4 million.
Their inclusion underlines just how aggressively English clubs are operating in the transfer market. Coventry’s spending puts them ahead of several established European giants in terms of gross expenditure.
Roma complete the top 10 with €123.5 million spent on new players. The Italian club have received €14.3 million from player sales, leaving their net spend at €109.2 million.
The complete ranking shows that Chelsea are comfortably ahead of the competition in terms of gross expenditure, while Tottenham are the only other club to have crossed the €350 million mark.

Football365’s separate ranking, also based on Transfermarkt data, similarly places seven Premier League clubs among Europe’s 10 biggest spenders, although its figures and ranking differ because of timing and methodology.
With the summer transfer window still open, the current ranking is not necessarily final. Clubs can still complete major signings and player sales before the deadline, meaning the figures could change in the coming days.
For now, however, Chelsea remain Europe’s biggest spenders, with Tottenham and Arsenal also committing extraordinary sums to squad rebuilding. Real Madrid lead the challenge from outside England, while the unexpected presence of Ipswich Town and Coventry City adds an interesting dimension to this year’s transfer market.
The spending race is far from over, but one thing is already clear: the 2026 transfer window has once again shown that English clubs possess enormous financial power in European football.
