Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine forced to leave hospital after shooting by police

Bobi Wine, the leader of Uganda’s opposition People Power movement, was discharged from Nsambya Hospital yesterday, just a day after being admitted for treatment following a brutal police attack.

Wine, who was shot during the incident, underwent minor surgery to remove foreign bodies from his leg but was forced to leave the hospital prematurely due to police harassment.

“When the regime learned of my admission, security operatives came to the hospital and harassed the doctors treating me, demanding for details of my medical records,” Wine said in a social media post. “They also made several attempts to forcefully access my treatment room but were held off by our vigilant comrades.”

Wine also described how the police blocked roads leading to the hospital, disrupting traffic flow and putting other patients’ lives at risk. “As if that wasn’t enough, they also blocked all roads leading to the hospital, thereby disrupting hospital traffic flow and endangering more lives,” he said.

Fearing for his safety and considering the inconvenience caused to other patients, Wine decided to continue his treatment at home. “Consequently, after undergoing minor surgery to remove all foreign bodies that had remained in my leg, I decided to return home prematurely today for the sake of my safety, and out of consideration for other patients at Nsambya Hospital who do not deserve the inconvenience and intimidation,” he explained.

Wine expressed gratitude to supporters for their kind messages and vowed to speak out soon. “Many thanks to all of you who continue to send kind messages of support and consolation. We will soon speak out,” he said.

This incident has sparked widespread outrage and concern about the Ugandan government’s treatment of opposition leaders and the erosion of human rights in the country.
