ABUJA, NIGERIA — The United Nations Human Rights Office has expressed deep concern over reports of killings, abductions, and other violent attacks in Nigeria, warning that the deteriorating security situation continues to pose serious risks to vulnerable communities across the country.
In a statement, the UN human rights body said it had received credible reports indicating that civilians, including members of religious minority groups, have been affected by persistent violence in several parts of Nigeria. The organisation noted that incidents involving kidnappings, unlawful killings, and other human rights violations remain a major source of concern.
The UN called on Nigerian authorities to intensify efforts to protect civilians, investigate reported abuses, and ensure that those responsible for criminal acts are held accountable in accordance with the law.
According to the organisation, continued attacks on communities have contributed to growing humanitarian challenges, including displacement, disruption of livelihoods, and increased fear among affected populations. The agency stressed that the protection of human rights must remain central to all security and law enforcement operations.
The UN also highlighted reports of violence targeting vulnerable groups, urging authorities to strengthen measures aimed at safeguarding all citizens regardless of ethnicity, religion, or social background. It emphasized the importance of promoting tolerance, social cohesion, and respect for fundamental rights.
Human rights officials further appealed for improved access to justice for victims and their families, noting that accountability is essential for preventing future violations and restoring public confidence in state institutions.

The agency also called for support for victims of violence, including access to humanitarian assistance, psychosocial services, and protection programmes designed to help affected individuals rebuild their lives.
