A genotype refers to a person’s genetic makeup inherited from their parents. It determines traits passed through genes, including the type of hemoglobin in red blood cells. The most common genotypes are AA, AS, AC, SS, SC, and CC.

People with the AA genotype have normal hemoglobin and do not carry the sickle cell gene. Those with the AS genotype are known as sickle cell carriers. While they usually live healthy lives without symptoms, they can pass the sickle cell gene to their children.

Health experts advise that genotype testing should be done at accredited hospitals or medical laboratories to ensure accurate results. Parents are also encouraged to know the genotype of their children at an early age so appropriate healthcare decisions can be made if necessary.
