Borno State Government has joined forces with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to launch a roadmap aimed at eliminating open defecation across all 27 local government areas in the state.

According to the Diaspora Digital Media (DDM), Governor Babagana Zulum, represented by his deputy, Umar Kadafur while speaking during the launching in Maiduguri, state capital called on residents to support the initiative to make Borno open defecation-free.

He emphasized the importance of embracing the campaign to improve sanitation and hygiene practices across the state.

Kadafur stated that Zulum has made tremendous progress in Borno, saying “I’m excited to share the details with you.

The deputy governor highlighted Zulum’s commitment to improving education, transportation, infrastructure, and healthcare.

“For six years, we’ve remained steadfast in our mission to enhance the lives of Borno residents, despite financial limitations. Our initiative is a testament to our unwavering dedication to creating a thriving and sanitary Borno.”

“We’ve been working tirelessly to address critical issues across various sectors, including education, transportation, infrastructure, and healthcare.”

“Our efforts have been focused on rehabilitating schools, initiating the Maiduguri Ring Road Project, and rehabilitating hospitals and healthcare facilities.”

“I’m calling on everyone to champion the fight against open defecation in their own communities and spread awareness about the importance of proper sanitation,” he urged.”

“The campaign is crucial in promoting a culture of toilet use and ending the practice of open defecation, which contaminates the environment, spreads diseases, and contributes to stunting in children.”

“By taking this initiative back to their communities, individuals can help create a transformative impact on public health, dignity, and overall well-being.”

The governor instructed relevant agencies and departments to align their programs with the Open Defecation Free (ODF) objective, emphasizing its significance as a lasting legacy for future generations.

UNICEF’s Maiduguri Field Office Chief, Mrs. Gerida Birukila, praised the state government’s proactive stance on combating open defecation, acknowledging Borno’s position as a frontrunner in Nigeria’s efforts to eradicate the issue.

“We commend Borno’s progress in eliminating open defecation, with Biu and Shani Local Government Areas (LGAs) achieving certification as open defecation-free zones.”

“To achieve lasting change, we require commitment from not only the government, but also traditional institutions and the people at large, to drive behavioral change,” Birukila emphasized.

She stressed that open defecation poses significant health risks to children, including severe malnutrition, stunted growth, and increased susceptibility to disease like diarrhea, which can have long-lasting consequences on their cognitive development, educational attainment, and overall quality of life.

“It’s not just about building toilets and providing water. We need people to understand why using them matters, and that’s why we’re calling for everyone to get on board,” Birukila stated.

In addition, the Education Adviser to the British High Commission, Mr. James Donoghue, praised UNICEF’s tireless efforts in Borno, specifically highlighting their exceptional work in education.

He praised Teaching at the Right Level for doing an amazing job helping kids catch up on reading and math skills.

“During our school visits today, we observed significant advancements in arithmetic and literacy skills among students.”

“UNICEF’s efforts extend beyond sanitation, providing essential learning materials, which is truly commendable,” Donoghue stated.
