The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has given an update on efforts to resolve tensions from the recent killings in Uromi, Edo State.

Diaspora digital media (DDM) gathered that the Political leaders from Edo and Kano states have taken steps to calm the situation and prevent further violence.

The Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Markus Kangye, provided this update during a press briefing on Thursday.

He confirmed that the Edo State leadership visited Kano to engage with affected families and discuss necessary peace measures.

The visit aimed to reassure the victims’ relatives and prevent any retaliatory actions that could escalate the situation.

Background of the Uromi Killings

The crisis in Uromi was caused by a violent incident that resulted in multiple deaths and widespread panic.

The killings sparked outrage among different groups, raising concerns about possible ethnic or communal conflicts.

Historically, Edo and Kano states have shared social and economic ties, making any unrest a sensitive issue.

Following the incident, tensions grew, leading security agencies to heighten their presence in the affected areas.

The government called for calm while officials from both states intervened to mediate and prevent further violence.

Political leaders from both regions saw the need for dialogue to restore trust and ensure lasting peace.

Political Intervention and Resolution

Major General Kangye stated that political efforts had successfully resolved the conflict at the state level.

“So at the political level, everything has been resolved. I don’t think there is going to be any issue,” he said.

He warned that any individuals or groups attempting to instigate violence would face investigations by security agencies.

Authorities are monitoring the situation to ensure there are no further threats or attempts to disrupt peace.

The government assured residents that security forces remain committed to maintaining law and order.

Military Efforts Against Widespread Insecurity

Kangye addressed concerns about violent attacks in various parts of Nigeria, including Enugu, Benue, and Ondo states.

He dismissed claims that the military had relaxed its efforts against terrorists, bandits, and violent herdsmen.

“The military has not abandoned the war against violent herdsmen, terrorists, and bandits,” Kangye emphasized.

He added that many criminals had been neutralized, and the military remained committed to eliminating their networks.

Reports of insecurity have raised fears in affected communities, prompting demands for increased military action.

Kangye reassured the public that ongoing operations were yielding results, despite continued threats.

Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) Clarification

Kangye dismissed rumors that Niger Republic had withdrawn from the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF).

He explained that the MNJTF was established to combat cross-border terrorist activities within the Lake Chad Basin.

The task force includes Nigeria, Niger, Chad, and Cameroon, working together to address regional security challenges.

Kangye noted that any withdrawal would weaken the coalition’s effectiveness in fighting terrorism.

“So efforts must be sustained to make sure this synergy is sustained in the Lake Chad Basin Commission countries,” he added.

Regional cooperation remains vital in tackling terrorism, given its impact on multiple nations.

Conclusion

The Defence Headquarters’ update reflects ongoing efforts by both political leaders and security forces to maintain peace.

The situation in Edo and Kano appears resolved, but authorities remain alert to potential threats.
