Angry residents on Saturday disrupted a political rally organised by the City Boy Movement in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, carting away several empowerment materials meant for distribution during the event.
The rally was organised by supporters of Bola Ahmed Tinubu as part of efforts to mobilise grassroots support for his potential re-election bid in the 2027 presidential election.
However, the event reportedly descended into chaos after some residents stormed the venue, causing panic and forcing many participants to flee.
Witnesses said the rally had initially attracted a large crowd but quickly turned disorderly due to what they described as poor crowd control.
Videos circulating on social media showed dozens of people running from the venue while others scrambled to grab items brought for distribution under an empowerment programme.
Several individuals were seen carrying away tailoring machines, refrigerators and other materials believed to have been prepared for beneficiaries at the rally.
The situation reportedly became chaotic within minutes, with shouting and pushing as some people tried to escape the confusion while others seized the opportunity to take the items.
The City Boy Movement is one of several political support groups working to build grassroots backing for President Tinubu ahead of the next general elections, although the president has not officially declared his intention to seek a second term.
As of the time of filing this report, organisers of the rally and security agencies in Imo State had not released an official statement regarding the disruption, and it remains unclear whether anyone was injured during the incident.
