West Ham sign Mateus Fernandes as Arsenal loan defender Jakub Kiwior to Porto

(DDM) – West Ham United have strengthened their squad with the acquisition of Portuguese Under-21 star Mateus Fernandes from Southampton, while Arsenal have agreed to send defender Jakub Kiwior to FC Porto on a loan deal with an obligation to buy.

Fernandes, 21, has signed a five-year contract with West Ham in a transfer reported to be worth over £40 million.

The Portuguese midfielder arrives at a club struggling at the bottom of the Premier League, having suffered two consecutive defeats and an early exit from the League Cup against Wolves.

DDM gathered that Fernandes expressed excitement about joining West Ham, describing it as a “big step” in his career.

He promised to contribute fully to the team, stating that his focus is on playing good football and giving his best every day.

Manager Graham Potter, under mounting pressure due to the team’s slow start, welcomed Fernandes as a key addition.

Potter noted that the midfielder’s early career progression has been impressive and emphasized that his Premier League experience with Southampton last season makes him well-suited to aid West Ham’s revival.

The manager also highlighted Fernandes’ versatility and maturity, saying he brings a “different dimension” that could help the club turn around its challenging start.

(DDM) reports that Fernandes is expected to integrate immediately into Potter’s squad, with hopes that his creativity and composure in midfield will strengthen West Ham’s attacking and defensive transitions.

The club’s management is optimistic that his arrival will boost morale and improve performances across the Premier League campaign.

Meanwhile, Arsenal have finalised a deal for Polish international Jakub Kiwior, who will join Portuguese champions FC Porto on an initial loan worth €2 million.

The agreement includes an obligation for Porto to purchase the player for €17 million, along with performance-based add-ons and a potential sell-on clause that could push the total value to €30 million.

Kiwior, 25, has accepted personal terms with Porto and is eager for more regular playing time under coach Francesco Farioli.

DDM gathered that he is expected to travel to Portugal within 24 hours to complete medical examinations and finalize the transfer.

Arsenal see the move as an opportunity for Kiwior to gain experience and maintain his competitive edge while the club manages squad depth in the defensive department.

These moves signal active adjustments by both Premier League sides as they aim to address tactical gaps and performance concerns early in the season. Fernandes’ arrival provides West Ham with reinforcements to stabilize their campaign, while Kiwior’s loan to Porto allows Arsenal to ensure the player continues his development in a competitive European environment.
