WhatsApp Likely To Quit Nigeria Over $220m Fine, ‘Suppressive Policies’

WhatsApp, the popular messaging app owned by Meta, may be forced to suspend its operations in Nigeria due to a hefty $220 million fine imposed by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) for a data privacy breach.
According to sources close to the situation, Meta is contemplating withdrawing certain services from Nigeria due to further regulatory demands from the FCCPC.
The commission has directed WhatsApp to cease sharing user data with other Facebook companies and third parties without explicit user consent, disclose details about its data collection practices, and enhance user control over data usage.
The FCCPC’s demands come on the heels of a $220 million fine imposed on WhatsApp for a data privacy breach, which the company is struggling to comply with.
The fine, which is one of the largest in Nigeria’s history, has raised concerns about the ability of WhatsApp to continue operating in the country.
Sources have told Diaspora Digital Media that instead of seeking redress in court over the fine, the WhatsApp management at Meta are considering quiting the country altogether.
If WhatsApp were to suspend its operations in Nigeria, it would leave millions of users without access to the popular messaging app, which is the most used platform for personal and business communication.
