Woman bathes ex-lover with acid after breakup

A breakup turned violent in Ghana’s capital when a 30-year-old woman allegedly poured acid on her ex-boyfriend during a confrontation, police confirmed on Monday, June 9, 2025.
The Greater Accra Regional Police Command said Mavis Nkrumah was arrested after allegedly attacking 29-year-old Gideon Frimpong, a commercial taxi driver, with a corrosive substance during an argument linked to their recent breakup.
The shocking incident reportedly occurred when the former couple met at a private location to discuss unresolved issues surrounding their failed relationship.
According to eyewitnesses and initial police reports, what began as a civil discussion quickly escalated into a verbal altercation.
During the heated exchange, Nkrumah allegedly reached into her handbag and pulled out a container filled with acid.
Without warning, she splashed the substance directly onto Frimpong’s face and upper body.
The victim screamed in agony as the acid burned through his skin. Bystanders rushed to his aid while Nkrumah attempted to flee the scene.
Eye witnesses contacted emergency services and provided a detailed description that led to her swift arrest.
Police officers apprehended the suspect less than an hour later. She is currently in custody and assisting with ongoing investigations.
Authorities say they are treating the case as a premeditated act of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Frimpong was immediately rushed to a nearby medical facility, where doctors confirmed he sustained severe burns to his face, chest, and arms.
Medical staff said he is in stable condition but warned he faces long-term treatment, including potential skin grafts and psychological support.
“This is a deeply disturbing case,” said Superintendent Joseph Tetteh, spokesperson for the Accra police.
“We urge couples to seek peaceful resolutions and avoid violence. No breakup should end in blood or pain.”
The police have not disclosed the motive behind Nkrumah’s alleged actions but confirmed that she will be charged under Ghana’s criminal code.
Prosecutors are expected to file formal charges within the week.
Community leaders have condemned the act and called for justice for the victim.
The attack has sparked fresh debate on domestic violence, mental health, and toxic relationships in Ghanaian society.
Frimpong’s family has appealed for public support and prayers as he battles through the early stages of recovery.
