Xabi Alonso Confirms Enzo Fernandez Will Stay at Chelsea Despite Real Madrid Transfer Interest

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has made his position unmistakably clear regarding the future of Enzo Fernandez, insisting the Argentine midfielder remains central to the club’s long term ambitions despite growing speculation linking him with Spanish giants Real Madrid.

The former Bayer Leverkusen coach, who officially began his reign at Stamford Bridge this summer, has wasted little time outlining his vision for the Blues. One of his biggest priorities is ensuring that Fernandez remains at the heart of the project as Chelsea prepare for a new Premier League campaign.

Recent reports have suggested that Real Madrid are monitoring the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner, with the player’s representatives believed to have explored possible options should an opportunity arise in Spain. However, Alonso has publicly shut down the rumours, making it clear that Chelsea have no desire to part ways with one of their most influential stars.

Speaking during his first major media appearance as Chelsea boss, Alonso confirmed he had already held private discussions with Fernandez but insisted the details would remain confidential.

“We have spoken, but what we discussed will remain between us,” Alonso explained.

When asked directly whether he wanted the Argentine midfielder to stay at Chelsea, the Spaniard answered without hesitation.

“Yes.”

The brief but decisive response reflected Chelsea’s determination to build their future around Fernandez rather than entertain offers from Europe’s elite.

Fernandez has become one of the Premier League’s most accomplished midfielders since arriving at Stamford Bridge in January 2023. Chelsea secured his services from Portuguese side Benfica in a British record transfer worth approximately £106.8 million (€121 million) after his outstanding performances helped Argentina win the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Although expectations were enormous following that historic move, Fernandez has gradually established himself as one of Chelsea’s most reliable performers. His intelligence in possession, tactical awareness, passing range and leadership qualities have made him indispensable regardless of the managerial changes that have taken place during his time in London.

Before his move to England, Fernandez enjoyed a remarkable rise through South American football. Born in San Martín, Argentina, he began his football education with River Plate, one of the country’s most successful clubs. His rapid development earned him first team opportunities before a successful loan spell at Defensa y Justicia, where he collected valuable experience and won continental silverware.

His outstanding performances eventually attracted Benfica, who signed him in 2022. Despite spending only a few months in Portugal, Fernandez adapted immediately to European football, helping Benfica dominate domestically while also impressing in the UEFA Champions League.

Those displays convinced Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni to include him in the national team squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Fernandez seized the opportunity spectacularly.

His performances throughout the tournament earned him the FIFA Young Player Award after Argentina lifted the World Cup trophy, instantly transforming him into one of football’s most sought after midfielders.

Chelsea moved quickly to secure his signature ahead of several European rivals, believing he possessed all the qualities required to become the club’s midfield leader for the next decade.

Now, nearly four years later, that belief has not changed.

Fernandez remains under contract until June 2032, giving Chelsea significant leverage against any club interested in acquiring his services. The lengthy agreement means the Blues are under no financial pressure to negotiate a sale, regardless of reported interest from Real Madrid.

However, Chelsea appear determined to resist any advances.

Alonso’s arrival has generated renewed optimism around Stamford Bridge following an inconsistent period in the club’s recent history. The former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich midfielder earned widespread praise for transforming Bayer Leverkusen into Bundesliga champions before accepting the challenge of rebuilding Chelsea.

The Spaniard believes creating stability will be essential if Chelsea are to return to competing for major honours.

He acknowledged that restoring the club’s winning culture would require patience, discipline and collective commitment from every member of the squad.

Returning Chelsea to European football also remains among his primary objectives.

According to Alonso, achieving that ambition depends on establishing a clear football identity before focusing on results.

He also praised the enthusiasm shown by both players and coaching staff since pre season preparations began, suggesting the atmosphere around the training ground has been extremely positive.

With Fernandez currently representing Argentina at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Chelsea expect him to enjoy a short post tournament break before reporting for pre season later this month.

His return will provide Alonso with one of the most experienced figures in the dressing room as preparations intensify ahead of the new campaign.

Chelsea’s opening Premier League fixture presents an immediate challenge with a London derby against Fulham, a match Alonso hopes will mark the beginning of a fresh chapter for the club.

Keeping Fernandez at Stamford Bridge could prove one of the most significant victories of Chelsea’s summer, particularly as the Blues seek to rebuild around world class talent capable of leading the club back into domestic and European contention.
