The entire structure of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Yobe State has defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), leaving only the party’s Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum, as the sole prominent figure remaining in the party’s ranks in the state.

This mass defection, announced on July 5, 2025, marks a significant realignment in Nigeria’s opposition politics as the 2027 general elections loom.

The defection of the Yobe PDP structure to the ADC is seen as a major blow to the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The move follows a broader trend of prominent opposition figures defecting to the ADC, including heavyweights like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Senate President David Mark, and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi.

While specific reasons behind the defection aren’t detailed, it’s likely that the PDP members were drawn to the ADC’s growing momentum and its potential to challenge the ruling party effectively.

Some local leaders cited frustration with internal crises within the PDP as a reason for their departure.

The defection has sparked intense speculation about the PDP’s future as Nigeria’s leading opposition party.

Political analyst Kabiru Danladi described the PDP as a “carcass” of its former self, arguing that the party has ceased to function as a viable political entity.

Danladi suggested that holding a convention could solve 75% of the party’s internal problems.

The ADC has been gaining traction, with similar defections reported in other states, including; Zamfara State.

PDP members have defected to the ADC, further strengthening the party’s position.

Borno State ADC has seen an influx of new members from the PDP.

The Rivers Liberation Movement (RLM), a former PDP pressure group, has collapsed its structure into the ADC, citing the need to liberate the New South from poverty and underdevelopment.

Other notable figures who have defected to the ADC include, Adamu Maina Waziri, former Minister of Police Affairs, who cited love for the nation and concern for the hardship Nigerians are facing as reasons for his decision.

Members of the Labour Party in Ogbadibo, who have merged fully with the ADC, citing a bold and strategic decision to realign the political landscape.

The ADC’s growing momentum has raised questions about the future of Nigeria’s opposition landscape, with some analysts suggesting that the party could become a formidable contender in the 2027 elections.
