Yoruba Imams Reject Groups Promoting Division And Extremism

IBADAN, OYO STATE — The League of Imams and Alfas in Yorubaland has distanced itself from groups and individuals allegedly promoting division, hatred, and extremist views, reaffirming its commitment to unity, peace, and the core teachings of Islam.

The religious body said it does not recognise or endorse organisations whose activities are capable of creating discord among Muslims or undermining harmonious relations within the wider society. It stressed that Islam encourages peace, tolerance, mutual respect, and coexistence among people of different backgrounds.

In a statement issued by its leadership, the league expressed concern over attempts by certain groups to speak on behalf of the Muslim community while advancing narratives that could fuel tension and disunity. The organisation maintained that such positions do not represent the views of the mainstream Islamic leadership in Yorubaland.

The body emphasized that Islamic teachings reject hatred, violence, and extremism, urging Muslims to remain steadfast in promoting unity and constructive engagement on issues affecting the community.

According to the league, efforts to fragment the Muslim community through inflammatory rhetoric or divisive campaigns are contrary to the principles of brotherhood and collective progress. It called on adherents to be cautious of individuals seeking to exploit religious sentiments for personal or ideological interests.

The organisation also reaffirmed its commitment to working with religious leaders, traditional institutions, government agencies, and civil society groups to promote peace and social harmony across the South-West and beyond.

Religious leaders noted that unity remains essential for addressing challenges facing the Muslim community and the nation as a whole. They urged clerics and community leaders to focus on issues that foster development, education, and moral guidance rather than engaging in activities that encourage conflict.

The league further called on Muslims to verify information from credible sources before reacting to statements or messages circulated on social media and other platforms, warning that misinformation can contribute to unnecessary tensions.

Observers say the statement reflects growing concern among religious leaders about the activities of fringe groups whose messages may not align with established religious institutions or widely accepted Islamic teachings.

It also encouraged young Muslims to seek knowledge from recognised scholars and institutions while avoiding influences that promote intolerance or hostility toward others.

As discussions about religious harmony continue across the country, the League of Imams and Alfas in Yorubaland pledged to sustain efforts aimed at strengthening unity within the Muslim community and fostering peaceful relations with people of other faiths.
