Zamfara Assembly to partner NGOs to reform almajiri education

The Zamfara State House of Assembly has expressed readiness to partner Non-governmental Organisations (NGOs) to reform almajiri education in the state.

This is contained in a statement by Malam Mustafa Jafaru-Kaura, the Director of General Press Affairs and Public Relations of the Assembly, on Saturday in Gusau.

The statement said the the speaker of the assembly, Alhaji Nasiru Mu’azu-Magarya, made the remarks when he received executives of Khalifa Dankadai Charitable (KDC) Foundation, a Kano-based NGO in his office.

It said the NGO was in the assembly to solicit for the lawmakers’ support for its smooth operation in the state.

Mu’azu-Magarya, who commended the NGO executives for the visit, expressed satisfaction with its efforts in reintegrating `Tsangaya’ system of education.

The speaker assured of the assembly’s readiness to creating a conducive atmosphere and legal framework for proper reintegration of Almajiri reform initiative with the western education in the state.

“The state legislature under my leadership passed a bill prohibiting all forms of distractions of young persons during school hours.

“This is an indication that, the assembly and KDC foundation are on the same page,” he said.

Earlier, the Project Director KDC foundation, Mr Khalifa-Usman Mustapha, said the foundation started with only one local government area in Kano in the year 2014.

He said it was playing a complementary role to the then President Goodluck Jonathan’s Almajiri System of Education.

“Now the NGO has a wider coverage of six Northwestern states of Nigeria, Zamfara inclusive.

“Our core mandate is how to review the curriculum of Tsangaya schools to reintegrate them into modern system of education in Nigeria,” Mustapha said.
