A Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed May 26 for judgment in a suit challenging the eligibility of former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election.
Justice Peter Lifu adjourned the matter for judgment on Monday after hearing arguments from lawyers representing both the plaintiff and the defence.
The suit was filed by a plaintiff identified as Jideobi, who is seeking an order barring Jonathan from presenting himself as a presidential aspirant under any political party ahead of the 2027 election.
The plaintiff is also asking the court to stop the Independent National Electoral Commission from accepting, processing or publishing Jonathan’s name as a candidate.
At the centre of the legal dispute is the interpretation of Sections 1 and 137(3) of the 1999 Constitution and whether Jonathan remains constitutionally qualified to seek another term as president.
Jonathan previously served as Nigeria’s president from 2010 to 2015 after completing the tenure of late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and later winning the 2011 presidential election.
