A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by former minister Kabiru Turaki has announced former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
The decision was ratified on Saturday during a special national convention held at the party’s office in Area 10, Garki, Abuja.
Although Jonathan was not present at the convention, his certificate of return was received on his behalf by Fred Agbedi, a member of the House of Representatives representing Bayelsa State.
The Turaki-led group had initially planned to hold the convention at the A-Class Park and Event Centre in Abuja.
However, the venue became unavailable after the Federal Capital Territory Administration directed hotels and event centres to deal only with political party leadership recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The faction aligned with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike is currently recognised by INEC as the official leadership of the PDP.
Earlier on Saturday, police officers blocked access roads leading to the original venue, forcing organisers to relocate the convention.
Party officials later confirmed that the gathering had been moved to the party’s office in Area 10, where delegates proceeded with the ratification process.
Sources within the faction said a date for the formal presentation of the party’s flag to Jonathan would be announced at a later time.
The development is the latest twist in the ongoing leadership dispute within the PDP as different factions continue to battle for control of the party ahead of the 2027 general election.
