2027 Presidency: “I am old enough to tell you my political ambition, ” Makinde says
The Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has declared on October 18, 2024, that he is old enough to announce his political ambition publicly without mincing words.
Makinde made this announcement after the speculation that he may be a potential candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2027 election.
The governor made it clear that he does not invite or encourage speculation about his future political plans.
Seyi cautioned Nigerians about the potential risks and consequences of allowing Nigeria to revert to a one-party system, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a multiparty democracy.
He said, “Nigeria must avoid becoming a one-party state to ensure that individuals from diverse backgrounds have the opportunity to showcase their talents and contribute to the country’s growth.
Addressing reporters at Fashola Farm in Oyo on Friday, he affirmed that any statements regarding his political future would be made in a public forum.
He emphasized that hosting the PDP reporters’ retreat was not motivated by personal presidential ambitions.
Also, he clarified that his focus remains on serving Oyo State, and if he decides to pursue other endeavors, he will openly declare his intentions.
Makinde said, “I’m old enough to make my own decisions, when I’m ready, I will clearly express my goals.”
“Speculation will not dictate my course of action; I will execute my agenda when the time comes.”
The Oyo governor reflected on his journey to office, acknowledging the pivotal role of public support in overcoming numerous challenges, including two unsuccessful Senate bids.
He also emphasized the significance of the people’s decision in the 2019 Oyo State gubernatorial election, stating that his victory was solely due to the support of the citizens, without any influence from a godfather or external funding.
Seyi, while reflecting on public scrutiny of his credentials said, “critics inquired about my political background, noting my lack of council or congressional experience and my dual unsuccessful Senate bids.”
“Although I lacked experience in governance, my success in business provided a foundation for my entry into politics, and made the people of Oyo to entrust me with the opportunity, despite the South West region being predominantly APC at the time.”
“In 2019, our administration crafted the ‘Road Map to Accelerated Development of Oyo State, 2019-2023,’ a comprehensive blueprint outlining our vision for the state’s advancement.”
“We publicly presented the document, emphasizing transparency and accountability, and invited the people to hold us to our commitments.”
“We are grateful that the people entrusted us with the opportunity to implement the plan, and we are pleased to report that its objectives are being successfully executed.”
Makinde reaffirmed his dedication to replicating the exemplary development achievements of pioneering leaders who elevated the SouthWest region’s global stature through visionary governance.
He noted that visionary leader Chief Obafemi Awolowo conceptualized and established farm settlements, including Fashola Farms, in the 1950s.
“ The pioneering initiative introduced superior breeds of cattle and other livestock, significantly enhancing Nigeria’s agricultural landscape,” he said.
“The proceeds from the cocoa sales were leveraged to finance the development of Cocoa House, an iconic high-rise building that pioneered modern architecture in Nigeria.”
Speaking on the legacy he desires to leave behind, he said he desires to leave a lasting legacy through the establishment of robust institutions that ensure sustainable good governance, regardless of future leadership in Oyo state.
