A fire outbreak in northern China has killed at least 22 people and seriously injured three others on Tuesday April 29, 2025.

The blaze occurred at a restaurant in Yingkou, Liaoning Province, around 12:25 p.m., according to Xinhua News Agency and CCTV.

Firefighters arrived at the scene after receiving emergency calls from nearby residents and eyewitnesses.

Huge flames and thick black smoke were seen pouring from the restaurant’s windows and entrance.

Photos showed the building engulfed in fire, with people screaming and running for safety.

Authorities said the fire spread quickly, trapping customers and staff inside the multi-storey building.

Three people were rescued and rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment.

All three are in critical condition and receiving care in intensive care units.

President Xi Jinping has called for urgent efforts to save the injured and assist victims’ families.

He also ordered a full investigation into the cause of the deadly fire incident.

Xi urged local governments to enforce strict fire safety checks in all public spaces.

The cause of the fire is still unknown as investigators comb the site for evidence.

Fire officials said the building was badly damaged, making access difficult for rescue teams.

Eyewitnesses described hearing explosions before seeing the building go up in flames.

Several people reportedly jumped from windows to escape the inferno.

Emergency responders worked for hours to bring the fire under control.

Authorities have sealed off the area for public safety and further investigation.

The restaurant was known to be busy during lunchtime, increasing the casualty figure.

Police and forensic teams have begun interviewing witnesses and staff members.

Local government officials said anyone found responsible will face strict legal consequences.

The building reportedly passed inspection months earlier, raising questions about enforcement standards.

Some citizens have blamed poor safety measures and weak regulation for the tragedy.

This is one of several recent fatal fires in China involving public buildings.

Earlier this year, a fire in Henan Province killed over a dozen factory workers.

Many residents have demanded better safety protocols and routine inspections to prevent future disasters.

The central government has promised reforms to improve emergency preparedness and fire prevention systems.

Families of victims have begun arriving at the hospital and site of the fire.

A hotline has been set up to assist families seeking information about their loved ones.

More updates will follow as the official investigation continues.
