Shettima To UN: Africa Deserves Two Permanent Seats On Security Council

Nigeria has renewed Africa’s long-running demand for a greater voice in the United Nations Security Council, with Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 81) in New York, calling for at least two permanent seats for Africa on the Council. Nigeria’s position also includes full rights and responsibilities attached to permanent membership, including veto power for as long as the veto remains part of the Council’s structure. The demand is rooted in Africa’s argument that the current structure of the UN Security Council reflects the balance of power that existed at the end of World War II in 1945, rather than the geopolitical realities of the 21st century. The Security Council currently has 15 members: five permanent members — China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States — and 10 non-permanent members elected for two-year terms. Peter Obi has spoken on the use of public funds for medical treatment abroad, saying that under his watch, no civil servant or appointed political office holder would travel abroad for medical treatment at public expense without a clear medical recommendation and proper authorization.

Obi made the statement after the inauguration and official opening of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) Delta State Campaign Headquarters in Asaba.

He said his administration would focus on strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare system while ensuring that public resources are used responsibly and for the benefit of the people.

The former Anambra State governor also stressed the need for proper procedures before public officials can access government funds for medical treatment outside the country.
