95 Libyans arrested in South Africa

South African police have arrested 95 Libyans in a raid on a suspected secret military training camp in the Mpumalanga province.
The camp, located on a farm in White River, approximately 360 kilometers northeast of Johannesburg, was discovered to be housing the Libyans, who claimed to be in the country on study visas to train as security guards.
However, police investigations suggest that the individuals had received military training, sparking concerns about the true purpose of their presence in South Africa.
The raid, which began two days ago, resulted in the arrest of all 95 Libyan nationals, who are currently being questioned by authorities.
National police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe revealed that the Libyans had been in the country since at least April, and that investigations were ongoing to determine the extent of the operation and whether there were more illegal bases in other parts of the country.
Local government official Jackie Macie confirmed that the owner of the farm would be questioned, and that authorities had received information about similar secret camps near two other towns in Mpumalanga province.
The province’s proximity to neighboring countries Mozambique and Swaziland has raised concerns about illegal immigration and potential security threats.
The operation has sparked widespread interest, with many questioning the purpose of the military training camp and whether it is connected to any particular group or conflict.
Police and authorities have remained tight-lipped about the details, but have assured that investigations will continue to uncover the truth.
The arrest of the 95 Libyan nationals has sent shockwaves through the country, with many calling for increased security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
