The State Chairman of Nigerian Union of Teachers, NUT, Jemiriegbe Jonathan, has been remanded in prison custody, by A Magistrate’s Court, sitting in Okpanam, Oshimili North Local Government Area, Delta State.
Also remanded in prison custody includes, three other officials of the union. They are standing trial on a four-count charge of alleged theft, malicious, willful and unlawful damage of properties belonging to NARZCO Nigeria Limited.
The union officials were arraigned by the police before the court, following a complaint lodged by property developers, NARZCO. Other officials arraigned alongside the chairman are Adimujo Ugochukwu, Ejarogan Samson, Ekpah John Onyemaechi and Secretary of the union, Joe Iyalokwe, who was said to be at large.
According to the charge sheet, the suspects “some time in 2015, at Obodogwu Quarters Okpanam, conspired to commit felony to wit; stealing and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 516 of the Criminal Code and Laws of Delta State, 2006.” They are also charged with theft of 302,000 blocks valued at N32,380,000; 22 trips of sand of 30 metric tonnes, valued at N539,000; 23 trips of granites of 30 metric tonnes at N3,266,000, among others.
