Lagos Releases 2026/2027 Academic Calendar, Fixes September 14 Resumption

LAGOS, Nigeria — The Lagos State Government has approved and released the harmonised 2026/2027 academic calendar for all public and private primary and secondary schools, fixing Monday, September 14, 2026, as the resumption date for the new session.

Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Alli-Balogun, announced the calendar in a statement on Thursday, confirming that it was finalised after two stakeholders’ meetings facilitated by the Office of Education Quality Assurance. The commissioner urged all public and private schools to strictly comply with the approved schedule.

According to the approved calendar, the first term will run from Monday, September 14, 2026, to Monday, December 21, 2026, with a mid-term break scheduled from November 2 to November 6. Open Day events for primary schools are set for October 29, while secondary schools will hold theirs on October 30. The first term comprises 64 school days.

The second term commences on January 11, 2027, and ends on April 9, 2027, with 61 school days. A mid-term break is scheduled for February 22 to February 26, 2027, while Open Day for primary and secondary schools falls on February 18 and February 19, 2027, respectively. The term incorporates public holidays including Eid-el-Fitr on March 10 and 11, Good Friday on March 26, and Easter Monday on March 29.

The third term begins on May 3, 2027, and runs until July 30, 2027, with 57 school days. A mid-term break is scheduled from June 14 to June 18, 2027, with Open Days on June 10 for primary and June 11 for secondary schools. Public holidays during the term include Workers’ Day on May 1, Eid-el-Kabir on May 17 and 18, and Democracy Day on June 12.

The total number of school days for the 2026/2027 session is 182.

Staff professional development is scheduled for September 7 to September 11, 2026, with schools permitted to pick any two days at their discretion. Schools operating international curricula may apply for flexibility by submitting the approved form on or before August 21, 2026.

The commissioner noted that International Literacy Day falls on September 8, 2026, while International Day of Education is marked on January 24, 2027. He added that the unified calendar reflects the state government’s commitment to improving the quality of education and ensuring a well-organised academic year.
