The language is spoken as either mother tongue or in its Creole form in countries like Brazil and the Caribbean.

As learnt, the conference will focus on standardizing the Yoruba orthography.

The Conference will be capped with the first Southwest Nigeria’s Joint celebration of International Mother Language Day on 21, February.

According to Professor Oluwole Oyetade of University of Ibadan and chairman of the organizing committee, elaborate consultations with teachers, learners and users of the language, as well as the ministries of education in Southwest, Kwara and Kogi States has begun.
