Gov Ugwuanyi lists challenges of community policing while inaugurating police constables

Ifeanyi Ugwuanyin, governor, Enugu State, says that newly inaugurated police constables in line with community policing policy, said the newly minted officers have a duty to penetrate communities to prevent crime and ensure security.

The governor said this while inaugurating 272 newly appointed and trained Special Constables.

The Community Policing Officers (CPOs) are set to be deployed to their various Communities, where they will be supervised by the Divisional Community Policing Committees to perform the duties of Crime detection and prevention, Settling of low-level civil disputes and petty crimes, Sensitize, reassure and advise the public on public safety, crime prevention and security.

Inaugurating the Constabularies, drawn from different communities and wards in the 17 Local Government Areas of the State, at Government House Enugu, the Governor reassures commitment to support and make the maximum actualization of Community Policing in the State possible.

He calls on the citizenry to give the Special Constables full support and cooperation, while wishing them great success and best of luck in their new roles.

Also, the Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Ndatsu thanked the Inspector-General of Police for initiating the re-jigged Community Policing Model and the Governor for all his supports, especially in making the selection and training of the Constabularies possible.

He further welcomes the Special Constables to the Nigeria Police Force fold and cautions them to justify the opportunity given to them to serve the nation by being professional and discharge their duties without fear or favour.

The Constables are also to deal with minor offences and social vices, Work with the community, schools and young people, business communities, religious bodies, cultural groups, community-based associations, recreational centres and hospitality businesses towards crime control, and Assist in traffic management and school safety duties.
