The Commissioner of Police in Cross River, Mr. Sikiru Akande, on Thursday pledged improved security for Rovers FC of Calabar during home matches.

Akande made the promise when the management of Rovers FC paid him a courtesy visit in his office in Calabar.

He gave the assurance that the police would take full charge of security during the team’s home matches, but appealed to club’s management to give the police advance notice of the games.

The commissioner also promised that the police command would provide escort for the team whenever they were going for away matches to ensure adequate security.

“I am here at home with you. I will give you the professional and moral support you need when travelling outside the state for matches.

“But you must let us know so that we can provide you police escort.

“I will personally take care of the welfare allowance of the officers that will be traveling with the team.

“We will give Cross River an enabling environment by providing round-the-clock security,’’ he said.

Earlier, the Chairman of Rovers FC, Ejen Ebam, commended the police for securing the state and deploying personnel in the UJ Esuene Stadium during Rovers’ week two match against Dynamite Force FC.

The chairman solicited for better security for the team during matches.

Ebam said that the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) rules provided for deployment of 30 policemen in a match venue to ensure security for the home and away teams.

“Normally, in our matches, the officers used to be very scanty; sometimes about 10 or 15 personnel are deployed.

“This is because of the understanding that Calabar is a peaceful place and has not had troubles. But you never can tell the day it will come up.

“So, if by your support we can get better security, we will appreciate it,’’ Ebam said. (NAN)
