The Ebonyi State Police Command said it has rescued the village head along with four others abducted by gunmen on Thursday.

The development followed the assurance of the Commissioner of Police, CP Aliyu Garba, that his men have swung into action and will deliver.

The attacking gunmen, who came on motor bikes around 2:00pm, injured several others.

They also robbed villagers of personal belongs including money and other items before taking their victims away.

An eyewitness, who is a member of the community, Mr. Amos Otubo narrated the ordeal.

Otubo said that they were relaxing at their village square when the gunmen stormed the scene in a commando-like fashion and abducted the five men.

“On arrival, the gunmen were seen putting on military uniforms as bike carried three persons.

“They felt relaxed when they saw them, thinking that they were military men on special duty considering the crisis in Effium Community in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

“We were still at the village square taking fresh air and discussing when we suddenly started hearing gun shot everywhere in the village and people started running to take cover.”

The Police Commissioner, however, did not disclose the conditions under which the captives were released.
