A member of a hunting posse in Omupo, an outskirt town, Kwara, North Central Nigeria, has been found dead on Monday after shootout with abductors on Friday.

The hunters engaged a gang of suspected kidnappers in a gun battle at Gaa Sulu community, Omupo district, in Ifelodun Local Government of Kwara, where he lost his life but was not discovered at the time.

The fighting happened at night after abductors kidnapped five people but were rescued by hunters who later called for help from the Nigerian police.

Both Nigeria’s army, police and other security agency increasingly rely on hunters using them mostly as forest rangers, trackers and gatherers of intelligence in the fight against insurgency, banditry and kidnappings.

One of the kidnappers was gunned down and the three abducted victims, a man and two women were rescued.
Five of the suspected kidnappers were later arrested by the police.

“It was not known to us till this morning when his decomposed corpse was discovered at a nearby bush close to the area where there was an exchange of gunfire between the hunters and the kidnappers,” according to a source in the community.
